hus having show'd you what I seeA
Of heaven I now will tellB
You also after search what beA
The damned wights of hellB
-
And O that they who read my linesC
Would ponder soberlyA
And lay to heart such things betimesC
As touch eternityA
-
The sleepy sinner little thinksC
What sorrows will aboundD
Within him when upon the brinksC
Of Tophet he is foundD
-
Hell is beyond all though a stateE
So doubtful and forlornF
So fearful that none can relateE
The pangs that there are bornF
-
God will exclude them utterlyA
From his most blessed faceC
And them involve in miseryA
In shame and in disgraceC
-
God is the fountain of all blissC
Of life of light and peaceC
They then must needs be comfortlessC
Who are depriv'd of theseC
-
Instead of life a living deathG
Will there in all be foundD
Dyings will be in every breathG
Thus sorrow will aboundD
-
No light but darkness here doth dwellB
No peace but horror strangeH
The fearful damning wights of hellB
In all will make this changeH
-
To many things the damned's woeI
Is liked in the wordJ
And that because no one can showI
The vengeance of the LordK
-
Unto a dreadful burning lakeL
All on a fiery flameM
Hell is compared for to makeL
All understand the sameM
-
A burning lake a furnace hotN
A burning oven tooO
Must be the portion share and lotN
Of those which evil sowC
-
This plainly shows the burning heatP
With which it will oppressC
All hearts and will like burnings eatP
Their souls with sore distressC
-
This burning lake it is God's wrathQ
Incensed by the sinR
Of those who do reject his pathQ
And wicked ways walk inR
-
Which wrath will so perplex all partsC
Of body and of soulS
As if up to the very heartsC
In burnings they did rollS
-
Again to show the stinking stateE
Of this so sad a caseC
Like burning brimstone God doth makeL
The hidings of his faceC
-
And truly as the steam and smokeT
And flames of brimstone smellB
To blind the eyes and stomach chokeT
So are the pangs of hellB
-
To see a sea of brimstone burnU
Who would it not affrightE
But they whom God to hell doth turnU
Are in most woful plightE
-
This burning cannot quenched beA
No not with tears of bloodE
No mournful groans in miseryA
Will here do any goodE
-
O damned men this is your fateE
The day of grace is doneV
Repentance now doth come too lateE
Mercy is fled and goneW
-
Your groans and cries they sooner shouldE
Have sounded in mine earsC
If grace you would have had or wouldE
Have me regard your tearsC
-
Me you offended with your sinR
Instructions you did slightE
Your sins against my law hath beenR
Justice shall have his rightE
-
I gave my Son to do you goodE
I gave you space and timeX
With him to close which you withstoodE
And did with hell combineY
-
Justice against you now is setE
Which you cannot appeaseC
Eternal justice doth you letE
From either life or easeC
-
Thus he that to this place doth comeZ
May groan and sigh and weepA2
But sin hath made that place his homeB2
And there it will him keepA2
-
Wherefore hell in another placeC
Is call'd a prison tooE
And all to show the evil caseC
Of all sin doth undoE
-
Which prison with its locks and barsC
Of God's lasting decreeA
Will hold them fast O how this marsC
All thought of being freeA
-
Out at these brazen bars they mayC2
The saints in glory seeA
But this will not their grief allayC2
But to them torment beA
-
Thus they in this infernal caveD2
Will now be holden fastE
From heavenly freedom though they craveD2
Of it they may not tasteE
-
The chains that darkness on them hangsC
Still ratt'ling in their earsC
Creates within them heavy pangsC
And still augments their fearsC
-
Thus hopeless of all remedyA
They dyingly do sinkE2
Into the jaws of miseryA
And seas of sorrow drinkE2
-
For being cop'd on every sideE
With helplessness and griefF2
Headlong into despair they slideE
Bereft of all reliefF2
-
Therefore this hell is called a pitE
Prepared for those that dieE
The second death a term most fitE
To show their miseryA
-
A pit that's bottomless is thisC
A gulf of grief and woeI
A dungeon which they cannot missC
That will themselves undoE
-
Thus without stay they always sinkE2
Thus fainting still they failG2
Despair they up like water drinkE2
These prisoners have no bailG2
-
Here meets them now that worm that gnawsC
And plucks their bowels outE
The pit too on them shuts her jawsC
This dreadful is no doubtE
-
This ghastly worm is guilt for sinR
Which on the conscience feedsC
With vipers' teeth both sharp and keenH2
Whereat it sorely bleedsC
-
This worm is fed by memoryA
Which strictly brings to mindE
All things done in prosperityA
As we in Scripture findE
-
No word nor thought nor act they didE
But now is set in sightE
Not one of them can now be hidE
Memory gives them lightE
-
On which the understanding stillI2
Will judge and sentence passC
This kills the mind and wounds the willI2
Alas alas alasC
-
O conscience is the slaughter shopJ2
There hangs the axe and knifeK2
'Tis there the worm makes all things hotE
And wearies out the lifeK2
-
Here then is execution doneV
On body and on soulS
For conscience will be brib'd of noneV
But gives to all their doleS
-
This worm 'tis said shall never dieE
But in the belly beA
Of all that in the flames shall lieE
O dreadful sight to seeA
-
This worm now needs must in them liveL2
For sin will still be thereM2
And guilt for God will not forgiveN2
Nor Christ their burden bearM2
-
But take from them all help and stayC2
And leave them to despairM2
Which feeds upon them night and dayC2
This is the damned's shareM2
-
Now will confusion so possessC
These monuments of ireO2
And so confound them with distressC
And trouble their desireP2
-
That what to think or what to doE
Or where to lay their headE
They know not 'tis the damned's woeI
To live and yet be deadE
-
These cast aways would fain have lifeK2
But know they never shallQ2
They would forget their dreadful plightE
But that sticks fast'st of allR2
-
God Christ and heaven they know are bestE
Yet dare not on them thinkE2
The saints they know in joys do restE
While they their tears do drinkE2
-
They cry alas but all in vainS2
They stick fast in the mireO2
They would be rid of present painS2
Yet set themselves on fireP2
-
Darkness is their perplexityA
Yet do they hate the lightE
They always see their miseryA
Yet are themselves all nightE
-
They are all dead yet live they doE
Yet neither live nor dieE
They die to weal and live to woeI
This is their miseryA
-
Amidst all this so great a scareM2
That here I do relateE
Another falleth to their shareM2
In this their sad estateE
-
The legions of infernal fiendsC
Then with them needs must beA
A just reward for all their painsC
This they shall feel and seeA
-
With yellings howlings shrieks and criesC
And other doleful noiseC
With trembling hearts and failing eyesC
These are their hellish joysC
-
These angels black they would obeyC2
And serve with greedy mindE
And take delight to go astrayC2
That pleasure they might findE
-
Which pleasure now like poison turnsC
Their joy to heavinessC
Yea like the gall of asps it burnsC
And doth them sore oppressC
-
Now is the joy they lived inR
All turned to brinish tearsC
And resolute attempts to sinR
Turn'd into hellish fearsC
-
The floods run trickling down their faceC
Their hearts do prick and acheL
While they lament their woful caseC
Their loins totter and shakeL
-
O wetted cheeks with bleared eyesC
How fully do you showI
The pangs that in their bosom liesC
And grief they undergoI
-
Their dolour in their bitternessC
So greatly they bemoanT2
That hell itself this to expressC
Doth echo with their groanT2
-
Thus broiling on the burning gratesC
They now to wailing goI
And say of those unhappy fatesC
That did them thus undoE
-
Alas my grief hard hap had IE
Those dolours here to findE
A living death in hell I lieE
Involv'd with grief of mindE
-
I once was fair for light and graceC
My days were long and goodE
I lived in a blessed placeC
Where was most heav'nly foodE
-
But wretch I am I slighted lifeK2
I chose in death to liveL2
O for these days now if I mightE
Ten thousand worlds would giveN2
-
What time had I to pray and readE
What time to hear the wordE
