Heaven is a place also a stateA
It doth all things excelB
No man can fully it relateA
Nor of its glory tellB
-
God made it for his residenceC
To sit on as a throneD
Which shows to us the excellenceC
Whereby it may be knownD
-
Doubtless the fabric that was builtE
For this so great a kingF
Must needs surprise thee if thou wiltE
But duly mind the thingF
-
If all that build do build to suitG
The glory of their stateA
What orator though most acuteG
Can fully heaven relateA
-
If palaces that princes buildH
Which yet are made of clayI
Do so amaze when much beheldH
Of heaven what shall we sayI
-
It is the high and holy placeJ
No moth can there annoyK
Nor make to fade that goodly graceJ
That saints shall there enjoyK
-
Mansions for glory and for restH
Do there prepared standH
Buildings eternal for the blestH
Are there provided andH
-
The glory and the comelinessJ
By deepest thought none mayI
With heart or mouth fully expressJ
Nor can before that dayI
-
These heav'ns we see be as a scrollL
Or garment folded upM
Before they do together rollL
And we call'd in to supM
-
There with the king the bridegroom andH
By him are led intoH
His palace chambers there to standH
With his prospect to our viewH
-
And taste and smell and be inflam'dH
And ravished to seeJ
The buildings he hath for us fram'dH
How full of heaven they beJ
-
Its state also is marvellousJ
For beauty to beholdH
All goodness there is plenteousJ
And better far than goldH
-
Adorn'd with grace and righteousnessJ
While fragrant scents of loveN
O'erflow with everlasting blissJ
All that do dwell aboveN
-
The heavenly majesty whose faceJ
Doth far exceed the sunO
Will there cast forth its rays of graceJ
After this world is doneO
-
Which rays and beams will so possessJ
All things that there shall dwellB
With so much glory light and blissJ
That none can think or tellB
-
That wisdom which doth order allP
Shall there be fully shownD
That strength that bears the world there shallQ
By every one be knownD
-
That holiness and sanctityJ
Which doth all thought surpassJ
Shall there in present purityJ
Outshine the crystal glassJ
-
The beauty and the comelinessJ
Of this Almighty shallQ
Make amiable with lasting blissJ
Those he thereto shall callP
-
The presence of this God will beJ
Eternal life in allP
And health and gladness while we seeJ
Thy face O immortalR
-
Here will the Lord make clear and plainS
How sweetly did agreeJ
His attributes when Christ was slainS
Our Saviour to beJ
-
How wisdom did find out the wayI
How strength did make him standH
How holiness did bear the swayI
And answer just demandH
-
How all these attributes did bendH
Themselves to work our lifeT
Through the Christ whom God did sendH
To save us by his mightH
-
All this will sparkle in our eyeU
Within the holy placeJ
And greatly raise our melodyJ
And flow our hearts with graceJ
-
The largest thought that can ariseJ
Within the widest heartH
Shall then be filled with surprizeJ
And pleas'd in every partH
-
All mysteries shall here be seenV
And every knot unty'dH
Electing love that hid hath beenW
Shall shine on every sideH
-
The God of glory here will beJ
The life of every oneO
Whose goodly attributes shall weJ
Possess them as our ownD
-
By wisdom we all things shall knowX
By light all things shall seeJ
By strength too all things we shall doH
When we in glory beJ
-
The Holy Lamb of God alsoX
Who for our sakes did dieH
The holy ones of God shall knowX
And that most perfectlyJ
-
Those small and short discoveriesJ
That we have of him hereY
Will there be seen with open eyesJ
In visions full and clearZ
-
Those many thousand acts of graceJ
That here we feel and findH
Shall there be real with open faceJ
Upon his heart most kindH
-
There he will show us how he wasJ
Our prophet priest and kingF
And how he did maintain our causeJ
And us to glory bringF
-
There we shall see how he was touch'dH
With all our grief and painS
As in his word he hath avouch'dH
When we with him shall reignS
-
He'll show us also how he didH
Maintain our faith and loveN
And why his face sometimes he hidH
From us who are his doveN
-
These tempting times that here we haveA2
We there shall see were goodH
Also that hidden strength he gaveB2
The purchase of his bloodH
-
That he should stand for us beforeC2
His Father thus we readH
But then shall see and shall adoreC2
Him for his gracious deedH
-
Though we are vile he without shameD2
Before the angels allP
Lays out his strength his worth and nameD2
For us who are in thrallP
-
This is he who was mock'd and beatH
Spit on and crown'd with thornsJ
Who for us had a bloody sweatH
Whose heart was broke with scornsJ
-
'Tis he who stands so much our friendH
As shortly we shall seeJ
With open face world without endH
And in his presence beJ
-
That head that once was crown'd with thornsJ
Shall now with glory shineE2
That heart that broken was with scornsJ
Shall flow with life divineE2
-
That man that here met with disgraceJ
We there shall see so brightH
That angels can't behold his faceJ
For its exceeding lightH
-
What gladness will possess our heartH
When we shall see these thingsJ
What light and life in every partH
Will rise like lasting springsJ
-
O blessed face and holy graceJ
When shall we see this dayH
Lord fetch us to this goodly placeJ
We humbly do thee prayH
-
Next to this Lamb we shall beholdH
All saints both more and lessJ
With whit'ned robes in glory roll'dH
'Cause him they did confessJ
-
Each walking in his righteousnessJ
With shining crowns of goldH
Triumphing still in heav'nly blissJ
Amazing to beholdH
-
Each person for his majestyJ
Doth represent a kingF
Yea angel like for dignityJ
And seraphims that singF
-
Each motion of their mind and soX
Each twinkling of their eyeH
Each word they speak and step they goX
It is in purityJ
-
Immortal are they every oneO
Wrapt up in health and lightH
Mortality from them is goneF2
Weakness is turn'd to mightH
-
The stars are not so clear as theyH
They equalize the sunO
Their glory shines to perfect dayH
Which day will ne'er be doneO
-
No sorrow can them now annoyK
Nor weakness grief or painS
No faintness can abate their joyK
They now in life do reignS
-
They shall not there as here be vex'dH
With Satan men or sinW
Nor with their wicked hearts perplex'dH
The heavens have cop'd them inW
-
Thus as they shine in their estateH
So too in their degreeJ
Which is most goodly to relateH
And ravishing to seeJ
-
The majesty whom they adoreC2
Doth them in wisdom placeJ
Upon the thrones and that beforeC2
The angels to their graceJ
-
The saints of the Old TestamentH
Full right to their degreeJ
Likewise the New in excellentH
Magnificency beJ
-
Each one his badge of glory wearsJ
According to his placeJ
According as was his affairsJ
Here in the time of graceJ
-
Some on the right hand of the LambG2
Likewise some on the leftH
With robes and golden chains do standH
Most grave most sage and deftH
-
The martyr here is known from himH2
Who peaceably did dieH
Both by the place he sitteth inW
And by his dignityJ
-
Each father saint and prophet shallQ
According to his worthI2
Enjoy the honour of his callP
And plainly hold it forthJ2
-
Those bodies which sometimes were tornK2
And bones that broken wereL2
For God's word he doth now adornK2
With health and glory fairM2
-
Thus when in heav'nly harmonyJ
These blessed saints appearZ
Adorn'd with grace and majestyJ
What gladness will be thereM2
-
The light and grace and countenanceJ
The least of these shall haveA2
Will so with terror them advanceJ
And make their face so graveB2
-
That at them all the world will shakeN2
When they lift up their headH
Princes and kings will at them quakeN2
And fall before them deadH
-
This shall we see thus shall we beJ
O would the day were comeO2
Lord Jesus take us up to theeJ
To this desired homeP2
-
Angels also we shall beholdH
When we on high ascendH
Each shining like to men of goldH
And on the Lord attendH
-
These goodly creatures full of graceJ
Shall stand about the throneD
Each one with lightning in his faceJ
And shall to us be knownD
-
These cherubims with one accordH
Shall cry continuallyJ
Ah holy holy holy LordH
And heavenly majestyJ
