The egg's no chick by falling from the henB
Nor man a Christian till he's born againB
The egg's at first contained in the shellC
Men afore grace in sins and darkness dwellC
The egg when laid by warmth is made a chickenD
And Christ by grace those dead in sin doth quickenD
The egg when first a chick the shell's its prisonD
So's flesh to the soul who yet with Christ is risenD
The shell doth crack the chick doth chirp and peepE
The flesh decays as men do pray and weepE
The shell doth break the chick's at libertyF
The flesh falls off the soul mounts up on highG
But both do not enjoy the self same plightH
The soul is safe the chick now fears the kiteH

But chicks from rotten eggs do not proceedI
Nor is a hypocrite a saint indeedI
The rotten egg though underneath the henB
If crack'd stinks and is loathsome unto menB
Nor doth her warmth make what is rotten soundJ
What's rotten rotten will at last be foundJ
The hypocrite sin has him in possessionD
He is a rotten egg under professionD

Some eggs bring cockatrices and some menB
Seem hatch'd and brooded in the viper's denB
Some eggs bring wild fowls and some men there beF
As wild as are the wildest fowls that fleeF
Some eggs bring spiders and some men appearK
More venom'd than the worst of spiders areL
Some eggs bring piss ants and some seem to meF
As much for trifles as the piss ants beF
Thus divers eggs do produce divers shapesM
As like some men as monkeys are like apesM
But this is but an egg were it a chickN
Here had been legs and wings and bones to pickN
