Man's like a candle in a candlestickA
Made up of tallow and a little wickA
And as the candle when it is not lightedB
So is he who is in his sins benightedC
Nor can a man his soul with grace inspireD
More than can candles set themselves on fireE
Candles receive their light from what they are notF
Men grace from Him for whom at first they care notF
We manage candles when they take the fireE
God men when he with grace doth them inspireD
And biggest candles give the better lightG
As grace on biggest sinners shines most brightG
The candle shines to make another seeH
A saint unto his neighbour light should beH
The blinking candle we do much despiseI
Saints dim of light are high in no man's eyesI
Again though it may seem to some a riddleJ
We use to light our candles at the middleJ
True light doth at the candle's end appearK
And grace the heart first reaches by the earL
But 'tis the wick the fire doth kindle onM
As 'tis the heart that grace first works uponM
Thus both do fasten upon what's the mainN
And so their life and vigour do maintainN
The tallow makes the wick yield to the fireE
And sinful flesh doth make the soul desireE
That grace may kindle on it in it burnO
So evil makes the soul from evil turnO
But candles in the wind are apt to flareP
And Christians in a tempest to despairP
The flame also with smoke attended isQ
And in our holy lives there's much amissR
Sometimes a thief will candle light annoyS
And lusts do seek our graces to destroyS
What brackish is will make a candle sputterE
'Twixt sin and grace there's oft' a heavy clutterE
Sometimes the light burns dim 'cause of the snuffT
Sometimes it is blown quite out with a puffT
But watchfulness preventeth both these evilsU
Keeps candles light and grace in spite of devilsU
Nor let not snuffs nor puffs make us to doubtV
Our candles may be lighted though puffed outV
The candle in the night doth all excelW
Nor sun nor moon nor stars then shine so wellW
So is the Christian in our hemisphereK
Whose light shows others how their course to steerK
When candles are put out all's in confusionX
Where Christians are not devils make intrusionX
Then happy are they who such candles haveY
All others dwell in darkness and the graveZ
But candles that do blink within the socketA2
And saints whose eyes are always in their pocketA2
Are much alike such candles make us fumbleJ
And at such saints good men and bad do stumbleJ
Good candles don't offend except sore eyesI
Nor hurt unless it be the silly fliesI
Thus none like burning candles in the nightG
Nor ought to holy living for delightG
But let us draw towards the candle's endB2
The fire you see doth wick and tallow spendB2
As grace man's life until his glass is runX
And so the candle and the man is doneX
The man now lays him down upon his bedC2
The wick yields up its fire and so is deadC2
The candle now extinct is but the manD2
By grace mounts up to glory there to standE2
