Withered Snowdrops Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB CDED FGHG CIJI FKLK MNLO PQJQ JRLR STUT VWBW HXYX BZBA2| THEY came in the early spring days | A |
| With the first refreshing showers | B |
| And I watched the growing beauty | C |
| Of the little drooping flowers | B |
| - | |
| They had no bright hues to charm me | C |
| No gay painting to allure | D |
| But they made me think of angels | E |
| They were all so white and pure | D |
| - | |
| In the early morns I saw them | F |
| Dew drops clinging to each bell | G |
| And the first glad sunbeam hasting | H |
| Just to kiss them ere they fell | G |
| - | |
| Daily grew their spotless beauty | C |
| But I feared when chill winds blew | I |
| They were all too frail and tender | J |
| And alas my fears were true | I |
| - | |
| One glad morn I went to see them | F |
| While the bright drops gemmed their snow | K |
| And one angel flower was withered | L |
| Its fair petals drooping low | K |
| - | |
| Its white sister's tears fell on it | M |
| And the sunbeam sadly shone | N |
| For its innocence was withered | L |
| And its purity was gone | O |
| - | |
| Still I left it there I could not | P |
| Tear it rudely from its place | Q |
| It might rise again and summer | J |
| Might restore its vanished grace | Q |
| - | |
| But my hopes grew weaker weaker | J |
| And my heart with grief was pained | R |
| When I knew it must be severed | L |
| From the innocence it stained | R |
| - | |
| I must take it from the pure ones | S |
| Henceforth they must live apart | T |
| But I could not cut my flow'ret | U |
| My lost angel from my heart | T |
| - | |
| Oft I think of that dead snowdrop | V |
| Think with sorrow when I meet | W |
| Day by day the poor lost flowers | B |
| Sullied snowdrops of the street | W |
| - | |
| They were pure once loved and loving | H |
| And there still lives good within | X |
| Ah speak gently to them harsh words | Y |
| Will not lead them from their sin | X |
| - | |
| They are not like withered flowers | B |
| That can never bloom again | Z |
| They can rise bright angel snowdrops | B |
| Purified from every stain | A2 |
