THEY came in the early spring daysA
With the first refreshing showersB
And I watched the growing beautyC
Of the little drooping flowersB
-
They had no bright hues to charm meC
No gay painting to allureD
But they made me think of angelsE
They were all so white and pureD
-
In the early morns I saw themF
Dew drops clinging to each bellG
And the first glad sunbeam hastingH
Just to kiss them ere they fellG
-
Daily grew their spotless beautyC
But I feared when chill winds blewI
They were all too frail and tenderJ
And alas my fears were trueI
-
One glad morn I went to see themF
While the bright drops gemmed their snowK
And one angel flower was witheredL
Its fair petals drooping lowK
-
Its white sister's tears fell on itM
And the sunbeam sadly shoneN
For its innocence was witheredL
And its purity was goneO
-
Still I left it there I could notP
Tear it rudely from its placeQ
It might rise again and summerJ
Might restore its vanished graceQ
-
But my hopes grew weaker weakerJ
And my heart with grief was painedR
When I knew it must be severedL
From the innocence it stainedR
-
I must take it from the pure onesS
Henceforth they must live apartT
But I could not cut my flow'retU
My lost angel from my heartT
-
Oft I think of that dead snowdropV
Think with sorrow when I meetW
Day by day the poor lost flowersB
Sullied snowdrops of the streetW
-
They were pure once loved and lovingH
And there still lives good withinX
Ah speak gently to them harsh wordsY
Will not lead them from their sinX
-
They are not like withered flowersB
That can never bloom againZ
They can rise bright angel snowdropsB
Purified from every stainA2
