The Word And The Deed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED CFCFGHGD CICICHCD

THE Word was first says the revelationA
Justice is older than error or strifeB
The Word preceded the IncarnationA
As symbol and type of law and lifeB
And always so are the mighty changesC
The word must be sown in the heart like seedD
Men's hands must tend it their lives defend itE
Till it burst into flower as a deathless DeedD
-
The primal truth neither dies nor slumbersC
But lives as the test of the common rightF
That the laws proclaimed by the sworded numbersC
May stand arraigned in the people's sightF
The Word is great and no Deed is greaterG
When both are of God to follow or leadH
But alas for the truth when the Word comes laterG
With questioned steps to sustain the DeedD
-
Not the noblest acts can be true solutionsC
The soul must be sated before the eyeI
Else the passionate glory of revolutionsC
Shall pass like the flames that flash and dieI
But forever the gain when the heart's convictionsC
Rooted in nature the masses leadH
The cries of rebellion are benedictionsC
When the Word has flowered in a perfect DeedD
