Chicago OctoberA
-
GAUNT in the midst of the prairieB
She who was once so fairC
Charred and rent are her garmentsD
Heavy and dark like cerementsD
Silent but round her the airC
Plaintively wails 'Miserere '-
-
Proud like a beautiful maidenE
Art like from forehead to feetF
Was she till pressed like a lemanE
Close to the breast of the demonE
Lusting for one so sweetF
So were her shoulders ladenE
-
Friends she had rich in her treasuresD
Shall the old taunt be trueG
Fallen they turn their cold facesD
Seeking new wealth gilded placesD
Saying we never knewG
Aught of her smiles or her pleasuresD
-
Silent she stands on the prairieB
Wrapped in her fire scathed sheetF
Around her thank God is the NationE
Weeping for her desolationE
Pouring its gold at her feetF
Answering her 'Miserere '-
-
-
Boston NovemberA
-
O broad breasted Queen among NationsD
O Mother so strong in thy youthH
Has the Lord looked upon thee in ireI
And willed thou be chastened by fireA
Without any ruthH
-
Has the Merciful tired of His mercyB
And turned from thy sinning in wrathJ
That the world with raised hand sees and pitiesB
Thy desolate daughters thy citiesB
Despoiled on their pathJ
-
One year since thy youngest was strickenE
Thy eldest lies stricken to dayK
Ah God was thy wrath without pityB
To tear the strong heart from our cityB
And cast it awayK
-
O Father forgive us our doubtingL
The stain from our weak souls effaceB
Thou rebukest we know but to chastenE
Thy hand has but fallen to hastenE
Return to thy graceB
-
Let us rise purified from our ashesB
As sinners have risen who grievedM
Let us show that twice sent desolationE
On every true heart in the nationE
Has conquest achievedM
