The Press Evangel Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHIIJJKK LLMMNNOOPP QQRRSSTUVW XXYYFF

GOD'S order 'Light ' when all was void and darkA
Brought mornless noon a flame without a sparkA
A gift unearned that none may hold or hideB
An outer glory not an inner guideB
But flamed no star in heaven to light the soulC
And lead the wayward thought toward Freedom's goalC
-
O Wasted ages Whither have ye ledD
The breeding masses for their daily breadD
Engendered serfs across a world of gloomE
The wavelike generations reach the tombE
Masters and lords they feared a lord's decreeF
Nor freedom knew nor truth to make them freeF
-
But hark A sound has reached the servile herdG
Strong brows are raised to catch the passing wordG
From mouth to mouth a common whisper fliesH
A wild fire message burns on lips and eyesH
Far off and near the kindred tidings throngI
How hopes come true how heroes challenge wrongI
How men have rights above all law's decreesJ
How weak ones rise and sweep the thrones like seasJ
Behold The people listen question ThenK
The inner light has come the boors are menK
-
What read ye here a dreamer's idle ruleL
A swelling pedant's lesson for a schoolL
Nay here no dreaming no delusive chartsM
But common interests for common heartsM
A truth a Principle beneath the sunN
One vibrant throb men's rights and wrongs are oneN
One heart's small keyboard touches all the notesO
One weak one's cry distends the million throatsO
Nor race nor nation bounds the human kindP
White yellow black one conscience and one mindP
-
How spread the doctrine I See the teachers flyQ
The printed messages across the skyQ
From land to land as never birds could wingR
With songs of promise birds could never singR
With mighty meanings clearing here and thereS
With nations' greetings kings could never shareS
With new communions whispering near and farT
With gathering armies bent on peace not warU
With kindly judges reading righteous lawsV
With strength and cheer for every struggling causeW
-
Roll on O cylinders of light and teachX
The helpless myriads tongue can never reachX
Make men not masses pulp and mud uniteY
The single grain of sand reflects the lightY
True freedom makes the individual freeF
And common law for all makes LibertyF
