The Press Evangel Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHIIJJKK LLMMNNOOPP QQRRSSTUVW XXYYFF| GOD'S order 'Light ' when all was void and dark | A |
| Brought mornless noon a flame without a spark | A |
| A gift unearned that none may hold or hide | B |
| An outer glory not an inner guide | B |
| But flamed no star in heaven to light the soul | C |
| And lead the wayward thought toward Freedom's goal | C |
| - | |
| O Wasted ages Whither have ye led | D |
| The breeding masses for their daily bread | D |
| Engendered serfs across a world of gloom | E |
| The wavelike generations reach the tomb | E |
| Masters and lords they feared a lord's decree | F |
| Nor freedom knew nor truth to make them free | F |
| - | |
| But hark A sound has reached the servile herd | G |
| Strong brows are raised to catch the passing word | G |
| From mouth to mouth a common whisper flies | H |
| A wild fire message burns on lips and eyes | H |
| Far off and near the kindred tidings throng | I |
| How hopes come true how heroes challenge wrong | I |
| How men have rights above all law's decrees | J |
| How weak ones rise and sweep the thrones like seas | J |
| Behold The people listen question Then | K |
| The inner light has come the boors are men | K |
| - | |
| What read ye here a dreamer's idle rule | L |
| A swelling pedant's lesson for a school | L |
| Nay here no dreaming no delusive charts | M |
| But common interests for common hearts | M |
| A truth a Principle beneath the sun | N |
| One vibrant throb men's rights and wrongs are one | N |
| One heart's small keyboard touches all the notes | O |
| One weak one's cry distends the million throats | O |
| Nor race nor nation bounds the human kind | P |
| White yellow black one conscience and one mind | P |
| - | |
| How spread the doctrine I See the teachers fly | Q |
| The printed messages across the sky | Q |
| From land to land as never birds could wing | R |
| With songs of promise birds could never sing | R |
| With mighty meanings clearing here and there | S |
| With nations' greetings kings could never share | S |
| With new communions whispering near and far | T |
| With gathering armies bent on peace not war | U |
| With kindly judges reading righteous laws | V |
| With strength and cheer for every struggling cause | W |
| - | |
| Roll on O cylinders of light and teach | X |
| The helpless myriads tongue can never reach | X |
| Make men not masses pulp and mud unite | Y |
| The single grain of sand reflects the light | Y |
| True freedom makes the individual free | F |
| And common law for all makes Liberty | F |
