Mary Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD E EA FGFG HIHI JKJKDEAR honored name beloved for human ties | A |
But loved and honored first that One was given | B |
In living proof to erring mortal eyes | A |
That our poor earth is near akin to heaven | B |
- | |
Sweet word of dual meaning one of grace | C |
And born of our kind advocate above | D |
And one by memory linked to that dear face | C |
That blessed my childhood with its mother love | D |
- | |
And taught me first the simple prayer 'To thee | E |
Poor banished sons of Eve we send our cries ' | - |
Through mist of years those words recall to me | E |
A childish face upturned to loving eyes | A |
- | |
And yet to some the name of Mary bears | F |
No special meaning and no gracious power | G |
In that dear word they seek for hidden snares | F |
As wasps find poison in the sweetest flower | G |
- | |
But faithful hearts can see o'er doubts and fears | H |
The Virgin link that binds the Lord to earth | I |
Which to the upturned trusting face appears | H |
A more than angel though of human birth | I |
- | |
The sweet faced moon reflects on cheerless night | J |
The rays of hidden sun to rise to morrow | K |
So unseen God still lets His promised light | J |
Through holy Mary shine upon our sorrow | K |
