Love's Sacrifice Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAC DEDE FGFG HIJK LMLM NONO PMPM FCMC

LOVE'S Herald flew o'er all the fields of GreeceA
Crying 'B
Love's altar waits for sacrifice 'B
And all folk answered like a wave of peaceA
With treasured offerings and gifts of priceC
-
Toward high Olympus every white road filledD
With pilgrims streaming to the blest abodeE
Each bore rich tribute some for joys fulfilledD
And some for blisses lingering on the roadE
-
The pious peasant drives his laden carF
The fisher youth bears treasure from the seaG
A wife brings honey for the sweets that areF
A maid brings roses for the sweets to beG
-
Here strides the soldier with his wreathed swordH
No more to glitter in his country's warsI
There walks the poet with his mystic wordJ
And smiles at Eros' mild recruit from MarsK
-
But midst these bearers of propitious giftsL
Behold where two a youth and maiden standM
She bears no boon his arm no burden liftsL
Save her dear fingers pressed within his handM
-
Their touch ignites the soft delicious fireN
Whose rays the very altar flames eclipseO
Their eyes are on each other sweet desireN
And yearning passion tremble on their lipsO
-
So fair so strong Ah Love what errant wilesP
Have brought these two so poor and so unblestM
But see Instead of anger Cupid smilesP
And lo he crowns their sacrifice as bestM
-
Their hands are empty but their hearts areF
Their gifts so rare for all the host sufficeC
Before the altar is their life wine spilledM
The love they long for is their sacrificeC
