IA
DEAD with his harness on himB
Rigid and cold and whiteC
Marking the place of the vanguardD
Still in the ancient fightC
-
The climber dead on the hill sideE
Before the height is wonF
The workman dead on the buildingG
Before the work is doneF
-
O for a tongue to utterH
The words that should be saidI
Of his worth that was silver livingG
That is gold and jasper deadI
-
Dead but the death was fittingG
His life to the latest breathJ
Was poured like wax on the chart of rightC
And is sealed by the stamp of DeathJ
-
Dead but the end was fittingG
First in the ranks he ledI
And he marks the height of his nation's gainK
As he lies in his harness deadI

IIA
Weep for him Ireland mother lonelyL
Weep for the son w'ho died for theeL
Wayward he was but he loved thee onlyL
Loyal and fearless as son could beL
Weep for him Ireland sorrowing nationF
Faithful to all who are true to theeL
Never a son in thy desolationF
Had holier love for thy cause than heL
-
Sons of the Old Land mark the storyL
Mother and son in the final testM
Weeping she sits in her darkened gloryL
Holding her dead to her stricken breastM
Only the dead on her knees are lyingG
Ah poor mother beneath the crossN
Strength is won by the constant tryingG
Crowns are gemmed by the tears of lossN
-
Sons of the Old Land mark the storyL
Mother and son to each other trueO
She called and he answered old and hoaryL
And gave her his life as a man should doO
She may weep but for us no weepingG
Tears are vain till the work is doneF
Tears for her but for us the keepingG
Our hearts as true as her faithful sonF
