Heart Hunger Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFGHIJ KLILMNO PFFQJRSHDTU VWXYLZ

THERE is no truth in faces save in childrenA
They laugh and frown and weep from nature's keysB
But we who meet the world give out false notesC
The true note dying muffled in the heartD
-
O there be woeful prayers and piteous wailingE
That spirits hear from lives that starve for loveF
The body's food is bread and wretches' criesG
Are heard and answered but the spirit's foodH
Is love and hearts that starve may die in agonyI
And no physician mark the cause of deathJ
-
You cannot read the faces they are masksK
Like yonder woman smiling at the lipsL
Silk clad bejeweled lapped with luxuryI
And beautiful and young ay smiling at the lipsL
But never in the eyes from inner lightM
A gracious temple hung with flowers withoutN
Within a naked corpse upon the stonesO
-
O years and years ago the hunger cameP
The desert thirst for love she prayed for loveF
She cried out in the night time of her soul for JoveF
The cup they gave was poison whipped to frothQ
For years she drank it knowing it for deathJ
She shrieked in soul against it but must drinkR
The skies were dumb she dared not swoon or screamS
As Indian mothers see babes die for foodH
She watched dry eyed beside her starving heartD
And only sobbed in secret for its gaspsT
And only raved one wild hour when it diedU
-
O Pain have pity Numb her quivering senseV
O Fame bring guerdon Thrice a thousand yearsW
Thy boy thief with the fox beneath his cloakX
Has let it gnaw his side unmoved and held the worldY
And she a slight woman smiling at the lipsL
With repartee and jest a corpse heart in her breastZ
