Grant-1885 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCB DDAA EEFFGGHIJA JKKLLMMMMM

BLESSED are Pain the smiterA
And Sorrow the uniterA
For one afflicted liesB
A symboled sacrificeC
And all our rancor diesB
-
No North no South O stern faced ChiefD
One weeping ours one cowled GriefD
Thy Country bowed in prayer and tearA
For North and South above thy bierA
-
For North and South O Soldier grimE
The broken ones to weep for himE
Who broke them He whose terrors blazedF
In smoking harvests cities razedF
Whose Fate like glance sent fear and chillG
Whose wordless lips spake deathless willG
Till all was shattered all was lostH
All hands dropped down all War's red costI
Laid there in ashes Hope and HateJ
And Shame and GloryA
-
Death and FateJ
Fall back Another touch is thineK
He drank not of thy poisoned wineK
Nor blindly met thy blind thrown lanceL
Nor died for sightless time or chanceL
But waited suffered bowed and triedM
Till all the dross was purifiedM
Till every well of hate was driedM
And North and South in sorrow viedM
And then at God's own calling diedM
