COME to me for wisdom ' said the mountainA
In the valley and the plainB
There is Knowledge dimmed with sorrow in the gainB
There is Effort with its hope like a fountainA
There the chained rebel PassionA
Laboring Strength and fleeting FashionA
There Ambition's leaping flameC
And the iris crown of FameC
But those gains are dear foreverD
Won from loss and pain and feverD
Nature's gospel never changesE
Every sudden force derangesE
Blind endeavor is not wiseE
Wisdom enters through the eyesE
And the seer is the knowerD
Is the doer and the sowerD
-
'Come to me for riches ' said the peakF
'I am leafless cold and calmG
But the treasures of the lily and the palmG
They are mine to bestow on those who seekF
I am gift and I am giverD
To the verdured fields belowH
As the motherhood of snowH
Daily gives the new born riverD
As a watcher on a towerD
Listening to the evening hourD
Sees the roads diverge and blendI
Sees the wandering currents endI
Where the moveless waters shineJ
On the far horizon lineJ
-
All the storied Past is mineJ
All its strange beliefs still clingingK
All its singers and their singingK
All the paths that led astrayL
All the meteors once called dayL
All the stars that rose to shineJ
Come to me for all are mineJ
-
'Come to me for safety ' said the heightM
'In the future as the pastN
Road and river end at lastN
Like a raindropp in the ever circling seaE
Who shall know by lessened sightM
Where the gain and where the lossE
In the desert they must crossE
Guides who lead their charge from illsE
Passing soon from town to townO
Through the forest and the downO
Take direction from the hillsE
Those who range a wider landP
Higher climb until they standP
Where the past and future swingK
Like a far blue ocean ringK
Those who sail from land afarQ
Leap from mountain top to starQ
Higher still from star to GodR
Have the spirit pilots trodR
Setting lights for mind and soulS
That the ships may reach the goalS
-
They shall safely steer who seeE
Sight is wisdom Come to meE
