Come sing a new song to her here while we listen 'A
They cry to her sons who singB
And one sings ' Mavourneen it makes the eyes glistenC
To think how the sorrows clingB
Like the clouds on your mountains wreathingB
Their green to a weeping gray 'A
And the bard with his passionate breathingB
Has no other sweet word to sayD
-
'Come sing a new song ' and their eyes while they're speakingB
Are dreaming of far off thingsE
And their hearts are away for the old words seekingB
Unheeding of him who singsE
But he smiles and sings on for the sound so slenderF
Has reached the deep note he knowsG
And the heart poem stirred by the word so tenderF
Out from the well spring flowsG
-
And he says in his song ' dhtar dheelish the tearfulH
She's ready to laugh when she cries '-
And they sob when they hear 'Sure she's sad when she's cheerfulH
And she smiles with the tears in her eyes '-
-
And he asks them What need of new poets to praise herF
Her harpers still sing in the pastI
And her first sweet old melodies com fort and raise herF
To joys never reached by her lastI
-
What need of new hero with Brian or preacherF
With Patrick or soldier with ConnJ
With her dark Ollamh Fohla what need of a teacherF
Sage ruler and builder in oneC
-
What need of new lovers with Deirdre and ImerF
With wonders and visions and elvesK
Sure no need at all has romancer or rhymerF
When the fairies belong to ourselvesK
-
What need of new tongues O the Gaelic is clearestL
Like Nature's own voice every wordM
'Ahagur Acushla SavourneenI' the dearestN
The ear of a girl ever heardM
-
They may talk of new causes Dhar Dhia ' our old oneC
Is fresher than ever to dayD
Like Erin's green sod that is steaming to GodO
The blood it has drunk in the frayD
-
They have scattered her seed with her blood and hate in itP
And the harvest has come to her hereF
Her crown still remains for the strong heart to win itP
And the hour of acceptance is nearF
-
Through ages of warfare and famine and prisonC
Her voice and her spirit were freeF
But the longest night ends and her name has uprisenC
The sunburst is red on the seaF
-
What need of new songs When his country is singingB
What word has the Poet to sayD
But to drink her a toast while the joy bells are ringingB
The dawn of her opening dayD
'O Bride of the Sea may the world know yourF
As well as it knows your tearsQ
-
As your past was for Freedom so be your hereafterF
And through all your coming yearsR
May no weak race be wronged and no strong robber fearedS
To oppressors grow hateful to slaves more endearedT
Till the world comes to know that the test of a causeU
Is the hatred of tyrants and Erin's applause '-
