YE white maned waves of the Western SeaA
That ride and roll to the strandB
Ye strong winged birds never forced a leeA
By the gales that sweep toward landB
Ye are symbols of death and of hope that savesC
As ye swoop in your strength and graceD
As ye roll to the land like the billowed gravesC
Of a past and puerile raceD
-
Cry 'Presto change ' and the lout is lordE
With his vulgar blood turned blueF
Go dub your knight with a slap of a swordE
As the kings in Europe doF
Go grade the lines of your social modeG
As you grade the palace wallH
The people forever to bear the loadG
And the gilded vanes o'er allH
-
But the human blocks will not lie as stillI
As the dull foundation stonesJ
But will rise like a sea with an awful willI
And ingulf the golden thronesJ
For the days are gone when a special raceJ
Took the place of the gilded vaneK
And the merit that mounts to the highest placeJ
Must have bone and sinew and brainK
-
Let the cant of ' the march of mind ' be heardL
Of the time to come when manM
Shall lose the mark of his brawn and beardN
In the future's leveling planM
'Tis the dream of a mind effeminateO
The whine for an easy crownP
There is no meed for the good and greatQ
In the weakling's leveling downP
-
A nation's boast is a nation's boneR
As well as its might of mindS
And the culture of either of these aloneR
Is the doom of a nation signedS
But the cant of the ultra suasion schoolT
Unsinews the hand and thighU
And preaches the creed of the weak to ruleT
And the strong to struggle and dieU
-
Our schools are spurred to the fatal raceJ
As if health were the nation's sinV
Till the head grows large and the vampire faceJ
Is gorged on the limbs so thinV
Our women have entered the abstract fieldsJ
And avaunt with the child and homeW
While the rind of science a pleasure yieldsJ
Shall they care for the lives to comeX
And they ape the manners of manly timesJ
In their sterile and worthless lifeY
Till the man of the future augments his crimesJ
With a raid for a Sabine wifeY
-
Ho white maned waves of the Western SeaJ
That ride and roll to the strandB
Ho strong winged birds never blown a leeJ
By the gales that sweep toward landB
Ye are symbols both of a hope that savesJ
As ye swoop in your strength and graceJ
As ye roll to the land like the billowed gravesJ
Of a suicidal raceJ
Ye have hoarded your strength in equal partsJ
For the men of the future reignK
Must have faithful souls and kindly heartsJ
And bone and sinew and brainK
