A Savage Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDC EFEF G GE HIHI

DIXON a Choctaw twenty years of ageA
Had killed a miner in a Leadville brawlB
Tried and condemned the rough beards curb their rageA
And watch him stride in freedom from the hallB
-
'Return on Friday to be shot to death '-
So ran the sentence it was Monday nightC
The dead man's comrades drew a well pleased breathD
Then all night long the gambling dens were brightC
-
The days sped slowly but the Friday cameE
And flocked the miners to the shooting groundF
They chose six riflemen of deadly aimE
And with low voices sat and lounged aroundF
-
'He will not come ' 'He's not a fool ' 'The menG
Who set the savage free must face the blame '-
A Choctaw brave smiled bitterly and thenG
Smiled proudly with raised head as Dixon cameE
-
Silent and stern a woman at his heelsH
He motions to the brave who stays her treadI
Next minute flame the guns the woman reelsH
And drops without a moan Dixon is deadI
