A Message Of Peace Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB C CD EFE GHGI JJKKLLMM NNOPQKKDDRRS STTDD

THERE once was a pirate greedy and boldA
Who ravaged for gain and saved the spoilsB
Till his coffers were bursting with bloodstained goldA
And millions of captives bore his toilsB
-
Then fear took hold of him and he criedC
'I have gathered enough now war should cease '-
And he sent out messengers far and wideC
To the strong ones only to ask for peaceD
-
'We are Christian brethren ' thus he spakeE
'Let us seal a contract never to fightF
Except against rebels who dare to breakE
The bonds we have made by the victor's right '-
-
And the strong ones listen and some applaudG
The kindly offer and righteous wordH
With never a dream of deceit or fraudG
They would spike the cannon and break the swordI
-
But others their elders listen and smileJ
At the sudden convert's unctuous styleJ
They watch for the peacemaker's change of wayK
But his war forges roar by night and by dayK
Even now while his godly messengers speakL
His guns are aflame on his enemies weakL
He has stolen the blade from the hand of his foeM
And he strikes the unarmed a merciless blowM
-
To the ends of the earth his oppression runsN
The rebels are blown from the mouths of his gunsN
His war tax devours his subject's foodO
He taxes their evil and taxes their goodP
He taxes their salt till he rots their bloodQ
He leaps on the friendless as on a preyK
And slinks tail down from the strong one's wayK
The pharisee' s can t goes up for peaceD
But the cries of his victims never ceaseD
The stifled voices of brave men riseR
From a thousand cells while his rascal spiesR
Are spending their blood money fast and freeS
-
And this is the Christian to overseeS
A world of evil a saint to preachT
A holy well doer come to teachT
A prophet to tell us war should ceaseD
A pious example of Christian peaceD
