A Message Of Peace Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB C CD EFE GHGI JJKKLLMM NNOPQKKDDRRS STTDD| THERE once was a pirate greedy and bold | A |
| Who ravaged for gain and saved the spoils | B |
| Till his coffers were bursting with bloodstained gold | A |
| And millions of captives bore his toils | B |
| - | |
| Then fear took hold of him and he cried | C |
| 'I have gathered enough now war should cease ' | - |
| And he sent out messengers far and wide | C |
| To the strong ones only to ask for peace | D |
| - | |
| 'We are Christian brethren ' thus he spake | E |
| 'Let us seal a contract never to fight | F |
| Except against rebels who dare to break | E |
| The bonds we have made by the victor's right ' | - |
| - | |
| And the strong ones listen and some applaud | G |
| The kindly offer and righteous word | H |
| With never a dream of deceit or fraud | G |
| They would spike the cannon and break the sword | I |
| - | |
| But others their elders listen and smile | J |
| At the sudden convert's unctuous style | J |
| They watch for the peacemaker's change of way | K |
| But his war forges roar by night and by day | K |
| Even now while his godly messengers speak | L |
| His guns are aflame on his enemies weak | L |
| He has stolen the blade from the hand of his foe | M |
| And he strikes the unarmed a merciless blow | M |
| - | |
| To the ends of the earth his oppression runs | N |
| The rebels are blown from the mouths of his guns | N |
| His war tax devours his subject's food | O |
| He taxes their evil and taxes their good | P |
| He taxes their salt till he rots their blood | Q |
| He leaps on the friendless as on a prey | K |
| And slinks tail down from the strong one's way | K |
| The pharisee' s can t goes up for peace | D |
| But the cries of his victims never cease | D |
| The stifled voices of brave men rise | R |
| From a thousand cells while his rascal spies | R |
| Are spending their blood money fast and free | S |
| - | |
| And this is the Christian to oversee | S |
| A world of evil a saint to preach | T |
| A holy well doer come to teach | T |
| A prophet to tell us war should cease | D |
| A pious example of Christian peace | D |
