A Builder's Lesson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEEFFF GGHHII JJKKLLL

'HOW shall I a habit break 'A
As you did that habit makeB
As you gathered you must loseC
As you yielded now refuseC
Thread by thread the strands we twistD
Till they bind us neck and wristD
Thread by thread the patient handE
Must untwine ere free we standE
As we builded stone by stoneF
We must toil unhelped aloneF
Till the wall is overthrownF
-
But remember as we tryG
Lighter every test goes byG
Wading in the stream grows deepH
Toward the center's downward sweepH
Backward turn each step ashoreI
Shallower is than that beforeI
-
Ah the precious years we wasteJ
Leveling what we raised in hasteJ
Doing what must be undoneK
Ere content or love be wonK
First across the gulf we castL
Kite borne threads till lines are passedL
And habit builds the bridge at lastL
