Devonshire Street W.1 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFG GHGH

The heavy mahogany door with its wrought iron screenA
Shuts And the sound is rich sympathetic discreetB
The sun still shines on this eighteenth century sceneA
With Edwardian faience adornment Devonshire StreetB
-
No hope And the X ray photographs under his armC
Confirm the message His wife stands timidly byD
The opposite brick built house looks lofty and calmE
Its chimneys steady against the mackerel skyD
-
No hope And the iron knob of this palisadeF
So cold to the touch is luckier now than heG
Oh merciless hurrying Londoners Why was I madeF
For the long and painful deathbed coming to meG
-
She puts her fingers in his as loving and sillyG
At long past Kensington dances she used to doH
It's cheaper to take the tube to PiccadillyG
And then we can catch a nineteen or twenty twoH
