LIKE the vultureA
Who on heavy morning cloudsB
With gentle wing reposingC
Looks for his preyD
Hover my songC
-
For a God hathE
Unto each prescribedF
His destined pathE
Which the happy oneG
Runs o'er swiftlyH
To his glad goalI
He whose heart cruelJ
Fate hath contractedK
Struggles but vainlyH
Against all the barriersL
The brazen thread raisesM
But which the harsh shearsN
Must one day severA
-
Through gloomy thicketsO
Presseth the wild deer onP
And with the sparrowsQ
Long have the wealthyH
Settled themselves in the marshR
-
Easy 'tis following the chariotS
That by Fortune is drivenG
Like the baggage that movesT
Over well mended highwaysU
After the train of a princeV
-
But who stands there apartW
In the thicket lost is his pathE
Behind him the bushesM
Are closing togetherA
The grass springs up againX
The desert engulphs himY
-
Ah who'll heal his afflictionsZ
To whom balsam was poisonG
Who from love's fullnessA2
Drank in misanthropy onlyH
First despised and now a despiserA
He in secret wastethE
All that he is worthE
In a selfishness vainB2
If there be on thy psalteryA
Father of Love but one toneC2
That to his ear may be pleasingC
Oh then quicken his heartW
Clear his cloud enveloped eyesD2
Over the thousand fountainsZ
Close by the thirsty oneG
In the desertE2
-
Thou who createst much joyF2
For each a measure o'erflowingC
Bless the sons of the chaseG2
When on the track of the preyA
With a wild thirsting for bloodK
Youthful and joyousA2
Avenging late the injusticeH2
Which the peasant resistedI2
Vainly for years with his staffJ2
-
But the lonely one veilK2
Within thy gold cloudsB
Surround with winter greenL2
Until the roses bloom againX
The humid locksM2
Oh Love of thy minstrelJ
-
With thy glimmering torchN2
Lightest thou himY
Through the fords when 'tis nightO2
Over bottomless placesM
On desert like plainsP2
With the thousand colours of morningC
Gladd'nest his bosomQ2
With the fierce biting stormR2
Bearest him proudly on highS2
Winter torrents rush from the cliffsT2
Blend with his psalmsU2
An altar of grateful delightO2
He finds in the much dreaded mountain'sZ
Snow begirded summitS
Which foreboding nationsZ
Crown'd with spirit dancesM
-
Thou stand'st with breast inscrutableJ
Mysteriously disclosedV2
High o'er the wondering worldW2
And look'st from cloudsB
Upon its realms and its majestyH
Which thou from the veins of thy brethrenG
Near thee dost waterA
