QUICK throbb'd my heart to norse haste hasteA
-
And lo 'twas done with speed of lightB
The evening soon the world embracedA
-
And o'er the mountains hung the nightB
Soon stood in robe of mist the oakC
-
A tow'ring giant in his sizeD
Where darkness through the thicket brokeC
-
And glared with hundred gloomy eyesD
-
From out a hill of clouds the moonE
-
With mournful gaze began to peerF
The winds their soft wings flutter'd soonE
-
And murmur'd in mine awe struck earG
The night a thousand monsters madeH
-
Yet fresh and joyous was my mindI
What fire within my veins then play'dH
-
What glow was in my bosom shrin'dH
-
I saw thee and with tender prideH
-
Felt thy sweet gaze pour joy on meJ
While all my heart was at thy sideH
-
And every breath I breath'd for theeJ
The roseate hues that spring suppliesD
-
Were playing round thy features fairK
And love for me ye DeitiesL
-
I hoped it I deserved it ne'erK
-
But when the morning sun return'dH
-
Departure filled with grief my heartH
Within thy kiss what rapture burn'dH
-
But in thy look what bitter smartH
I went thy gaze to earth first rovedH
-
Thou follow'dst me with tearful eyeM
And yet what rapture to be lovedH
-
And Gods to love what ecstasyJ
