MY trust in nothing now is placedA
-
HurrahB
So in the world true joy I tasteA
-
HurrahB
Then he who would be a comrade of mineC
Must rattle his glass and in chorus combineC
Over these dregs of wineC
-
I placed my trust in gold and wealthD
-
HurrahB
But then I lost all joy and healthD
-
Lack a dayE
Both here and there the money roll'dF
And when I had it here beholdF
From there had fled the goldF
-
I placed my trust in women nextG
-
HurrahB
But there in truth was sorely vex'dG
-
Lack a dayE
The False another portion soughtH
The True with tediousness were fraughtH
The Best could not be boughtI
-
My trust in travels then I placedA
-
HurrahB
And left my native land in hasteA
-
Lack a dayE
But not a single thing seem'd goodJ
The beds were bad and strange the foodK
And I not understoodJ
-
I placed my trust in rank and fameL
-
HurrahB
Another put me straight to shameL
-
Lack a dayE
And as I had been prominentM
All scowl'd upon me as I wentN
I found not one contentN
-
I placed my trust in war and fightO
-
HurrahB
We gain'd full many a triumph brightO
-
HurrahB
Into the foeman's land we cross'dP
We put our friends to equal costQ
And there a leg I lostP
-
My trust is placed in nothing nowR
-
HurrahB
At my command the world must bowR
-
HurrahB
And as we've ended feast and strainS
The cup we'll to the bottom drainS
No dregs must there remainS
