VAINLY wouldst thou to gain a heartA
-
Heap up a maiden's lap with goldB
The joys of love thou must impartA
-
Wouldst thou e'er see those joys unfoldB
The voices of the throng gold buysC
-
No single heart 'twill win for theeD
Wouldst thou a maiden make thy prizeC
-
Thyself alone the bribe must beD
-
If by no sacred tie thou'rt boundE
-
Oh youth thou must thyself restrainF
Well may true liberty be foundE
-
Tho' man may seem to wear a chainF
Let one alone inflame thee e'erG
-
And if her heart with love o'erflowsC
Let tenderness unite you thereH
-
If duty's self no fetter knowsC
-
First feel oh youth A girl then findI
-
Worthy thy choice let her choose theeD
In body fair and fair in mindI
-
And then thou wilt be blessed like meD
I who have made this art mine ownJ
-
A girl have chosen such as thisC
The blessing of the priest aloneJ
-
Is wanting to complete our blissC
-
Nought but my rapture is her guideK
-
Only for me she cares to pleaseC
Ne'er wanton save when by my sideK
-
And modest when the world she seesC
That time our glow may never chillL
-
She yields no right through frailtyD
Her favour is a favour stillL
-
And I must ever grateful beD
-
Yet I'm content and full of joyM
-
If she'll but grant her smile so sweetN
Or if at table she'll employM
-
To pillow hers her lover's feetN
Give me the apple that she bitO
-
The glass from which she drank bestowP
And when my kiss so orders itO
-
Her bosom veil'd till then will showP
-
And when she wills of love to speakQ
-
In fond and silent hours of blissC
Words from her mouth are all I seekQ
-
Nought else I crave not e'en a kissC
With what a soul her mind is fraughtR
-
Wreath'd round with charms unceasinglyM
She's perfect and she fails in noughtR
-
Save in her deigning to love meD
-
My rev'rence throws me at her feetR
-
My longing throws me on her breastR
This youth is rapture true and sweetR
-
Be wise thus seeking to be blestR
When death shall take thee from her sideR
-
To join the angelic choir aboveS
In heaven's bright mansions to abideR
No diff'rence at the change thoult proveT
