When man had ceased to utter his lamentA
-
A god then let me tell my tale of sorrowB
-
WHAT hope of once more meeting is there nowC
In the still closed blossoms of this dayD
Both heaven and hell thrown open seest thouC
What wav'ring thoughts within the bosom playD
No longer doubt Descending from the skyE
She lifts thee in her arms to realms on highE
-
And thus thou into Paradise wert broughtF
-
As worthy of a pure and endless lifeG
Nothing was left no wish no hope no thoughtF
-
Here was the boundary of thine inmost strifeG
And seeing one so fair so glorifiedH
The fount of yearning tears was straightway driedH
-
No motion stirr'd the day's revolving wheelI
-
In their own front the minutes seem'd to goB
The evening kiss a true and binding sealI
-
Ne'er changing till the morrow's sunlight glowB
The hours resembled sisters as they wentA
Yet each one from another differentJ
-
The last hour's kiss so sadly sweet effac'dJ
-
A beauteous network of entwining loveK
Now on the threshold pause the feet now hasteJ
-
As though a flaming cherub bade them moveL
The unwilling eye the dark road wanders o'erM
Backward it looks but closed it sees the doorN
-
And now within itself is closed this breastJ
-
As though it ne'er were open and as thoughB
Vying with ev'ry star no moments blestJ
-
Had in its presence felt a kindling glowB
Sadness reproach repentance weight of careO
Hang heavy on it in the sultry airO
-
Is not the world still left The rocky steepsP
-
Are they with holy shades no longer crown'dJ
Grows not the harvest ripe No longer creepsP
-
The espalier by the stream the copse aroundJ
Doth not the wondrous arch of heaven still riseP
Now rich in shape now shapeless to the eyesP
-
As seraph like from out the dark clouds' chorusP
-
With softness woven graceful light and fairO
Resembling Her in the blue aether o'er usP
-
A slender figure hovers in the airO
Thus didst thou see her joyously advanceP
The fairest of the fairest in the danceP
-
Yet but a moment dost thou boldly dareO
-
To clasp an airy form instead of hersP
Back to thine heart thou'lt find it better thereO
-
For there in changeful guise her image stirsP
What erst was one to many turneth fastJ
In thousand forms each dearer than the lastJ
-
As at the door on meeting lingerd sheQ
-
And step by step my faithful ardour bless'dJ
For the last kiss herself entreated meQ
-
And on my lips the last last kiss impress'dJ
Thus clearly traced the lov'd one's form we viewR
With flames engraven on a heart so trueR
-
A heart that firm as some embattled towerM
-
Itself for her her in itself reveresP
For her rejoices in its lasting powerM
-
Conscious alone when she herself appearsP
Feels itself freer in so sweet a thrallS
And only beats to give her thanks in allS
-
The power of loving and all yearning sighsP
-
For love responsive were effaced and drown'dJ
While longing hope for joyous enterpriseP
-
Was form'd and rapid action straightway foundJ
If love can e'er a loving one inspireT
Most lovingly it gave me now its fireM
-
And 'twas through her an inward sorrow layD
-
On soul and body heavily oppress'dJ
To mournful phantoms was my sight a preyD
-
In the drear void of a sad tortured breastJ
Now on the well known threshold Hope hath smil'dJ
Herself appeareth in the sunlight mildJ
-
Unto the peace of God which as we readJ
-
Blesseth us more than reason e'er bath doneU
Love's happy peace would I compare indeedJ
-
When in the presence of the dearest oneU
There rests the heart and there that sweetest thoughtJ
The thought of being hers is check'd by noughtJ
-
In the pure bosom doth a yearning floatJ
-
Unto a holier purer unknown BeingV
Its grateful aspiration to devoteJ
-
The Ever Nameless then unriddled seeingV
We call it piety such blest delightJ
I feel a share in when before her sightJ
-
Before her sight as 'neath the sun's hot rayD
-
Before her breath as 'neath the spring's soft windJ
In its deep wintry cavern melts awayD
-
Self love so long in icy chains confin'dJ
No selfishness and no self will are nighE
For at her advent they were forced to flyE
-
It seems as though she said quot As hours pass byE
-
They spread before us life with kindly planW
Small knowledge did the yesterday supplyE
-
To know the morrow is conceal'd from manW
And if the thought of evening made me startJ
The sun at setting gladden'd straight my heartJ
-
quot Act then as I and look with joyous mindJ
-
The moment in the face nor linger thouC
Meet it with speed so fraught with life so kindJ
-
In action and in love so radiant nowC
Let all things be where thou art childlike everM
Thus thoult be all thus thou'lt be vanquish'd never quotJ
-
Thou speakest well methought for as thy guideJ
-
The moment's favour did a god assignX
And each one feels himself when by thy sideJ
-
Fate's fav'rite in a moment so divineX
I tremble at thy look that bids me goB
Why should I care such wisdom vast to knowB
-
Now am I far And what would best befitJ
-
The present minute I could scarcely tellY
Full many a rich possession offers itJ
-
These but offend and I would fain repelY
Yearnings unquenchable still drive me onZ
All counsel save unbounded tears is goneA2
-
Flow on flow on in never ceasing courseP
-
Yet may ye never quench my inward fireM
Within my bosom heaves a mighty forceP
-
Where death and life contend in combat direT
Medicines may serve the body's pangs to stillB2
Nought but the spirit fails in strength of willB2
-
Fails in conception wherefore fails it soB
-
A thousand times her image it portraysP
Enchanting now and now compell'd to goB
-
Now indistinct now clothed in purest raysP
How could the smallest comfort here be flowingV
The ebb and flood the coming and the goingV
-
-
-
-
Leave me here now my life's companions trueR
-
Leave me alone on rock in moor and heathC2
But courage open lies the world to youR
-
The glorious heavens above the earth beneathC2
Observe investigate with searching eyesP
And nature will disclose her mysteriesP
-
To me is all I to myself am lostJ
-
Who the immortals' fav'rite erst was thoughtJ
They tempting sent Pandoras to my costJ
-
So rich in wealth with danger far more fraughtJ
They urged me to those lips with rapture crown'dJ
Deserted me and hurl'd me to the groundJ
