BE void of feelingA
A heart that soon is stirr'dB
Is a possession sadC
Upon this changing earthD
-
Behrisch let spring's sweet smileE
Never gladden thy browF
Then winter's gloomy tempestsG
Never will shadow it o'erH
-
Lean thyself ne'er on a maiden'sG
Sorrow engendering breastI
Ne'er on the armJ
Misery fraught of a friendK
-
Already envyL
From out his rocky ambushM
Upon thee turnsG
The force of his lynx like eyesG
-
Stretches his talonsG
On thee fallsG
In thy shouldersG
Cunningly plants themN
-
Strong are his skinny armsG
As panther clawsG
He shaketh theeL
And rends thy frameO
-
Death 'tis to partP
'Tis threefold deathQ
To part not hopingA
Ever to meet againR
-
Thou wouldst rejoice to leaveS
This hated land behindT
Wert thou not chain'd to meL
With friendships flowery chainsG
-
Burst them I'll not repineR
No noble friendK
Would stay his fellow captiveU
If means of flight appearV
-
The remembranceG
Of his dear friend's freedomW
Gives him freedomW
In his dungeonR
-
Thou go'st I'm leftX
But e'en alreadyL
The last year's winged spokesG
Whirl round the smoking axleY
-
I number the turnsG
Of the thundering wheelZ
The last one I blessG
Each bar then is broken I'm free then as thouF
