SIR Wit who is so much esteem'dA
-
And who is worthy of all honourB
Saw Beauty his superior deem'dA
-
By folks who loved to gaze upon herB
At this he was most sorely vex'dC
-
Then came Sir Breath long known as fitD
-
To represent the cause of witD
-
Beginning rudely I admitD
To treat the lady with a textC
To this she hearken'd not at allE
But hasten'd to his principalF
None are so wise they say as youG
Is not the world enough for twoG
-
If you are obstinate good byeH
If wise to love me you will tryH
For be assured the world can ne'erB
Give birth to a more handsome pairB
-
-
-
-
-
FAIR daughters were by Beauty rear'dI
-
Wit had but dull sons for his lotJ
So for a season it appear'dI
-
Beauty was constant Wit was notJ
But Wit's a native of the soilK
-
So he return'd work'd strove amainL
And found sweet guerdon for his toilK
-
Beauty to quicken him againL
