WHENCE comes our friend so hastilyA
-
When scarce the Eastern sky is greyB
Hath he just ceased though cold it beA
-
In yonder holy spot to prayB
The brook appears to hem his pathC
-
Would he barefooted o'er it goD
Why curse his orisons in wrathC
-
Across those heights beclad with snowD
-
Alas his warm bed he bath leftE
-
Where he had look'd for bliss I weenD
And if his cloak too had been reftE
-
How fearful his disgrace had beenD
By yonder villain sorely press'dE
-
His wallet from him has been tornD
Our hapless friend has been undress'dE
-
Left well nigh naked as when bornD
-
The reason why he came this roadE
-
Is that he sought a pair of eyesF
Which at the mill as brightly glow'dE
-
As those that are in ParadiseG
He will not soon again be thereH
-
From out the house he quickly hiedE
And when he gain'd the open airH
-
Thus bitterly and loudly criedE
-
Within her gaze so dazzling brightE
-
No word of treachery I could readE
She seem'd to see me with delightE
-
Yet plann'd e'en then this cruel deedE
Could I when basking in her smileI
-
Dream of the treason in her breastE
She bade kind Cupid stay awhileI
-
And he was there to make us blestE
-
To taste of love's sweet ecstasyA
-
Throughout the night that endless seem'dE
And for her mother's help to cryJ
-
Only when morning sunlight beam'dE
A dozen of her kith and kinD
-
A very human flood in press'dE
Her cousins came her aunts peer'd inD
-
And uncles brothers and the restE
-
Then what a tumult fierce and loudE
-
Each seem'd a beast of prey to beA
The maiden's honour all the crowdE
-
With fearful shout demand of meA
Why should they madmen like beginD
-
To fall upon a guiltless youthK
For he who such a prize would winD
-
Far nimbler needs must be in truthK
-
The way to follow up with skillL
-
His freaks by love betimes is knownD
He ne'er will leave within a millL
-
Sweet flowers for sixteen years aloneD
They stole my clothes away yes allM
-
And tried my cloak besides to stealN
How strange that any house so smallM
-
So many rascals could concealN
-
Then I sprang up and raved and sworeO
-
To force a passage through them thereH
I saw the treacherous maid once moreO
-
And she was still alas so fairH
They all gave way before my wrathC
-
Wild outcries flew about pell mellP
At length I managed to rush forthQ
-
With voice of thunder from that hellP
-
As maidens of the town we flyJ
-
We'll shun you maidens of the villageR
Leave it to those of qualityA
-
Their humble worshippers to pillageS
Yet if ye are of practised skillL
-
And of all tender ties afraidE
Exchange your lovers if ye willL
-
But never let them be betray'dE
-
Thus sings he in the winter nightE
-
While not a blade of grass was greenD
I laugh'd to see his piteous plightE
-
For it was well deserved I weenD
And may this be the fate of allM
-
Who treat by day their true loves illL
And with foolhardy daring crawlM
-
By night to Cupid's treacherous millL
