ALL my weary days I pass'dA
-
Sick at heart and poor in purseB
-
Poverty's the greatest curseB
-
Riches are the highest goodC
And to end my woes at lastA
-
Treasure seeking forth I spedD
-
Thou shalt have my soul insteadD
-
Thus I wrote and with my bloodE
-
Ring round ring I forthwith drewF
-
Wondrous flames collected thereG
-
Herbs and bones in order fairG
-
Till the charm had work'd arightE
Then to learned precepts trueF
-
Dug to find some treasure oldE
-
In the place my art foretoldE
-
Black and stormy was the nightE
-
Coming o'er the distant plainH
-
With the glimmer of a starI
-
Soon I saw a light afarI
-
As the hour of midnight knell'dE
Preparation was in vainH
-
Sudden all was lighted upJ
-
With the lustre of a cupJ
-
That a beauteous boy upheldE
-
Sweetly seem'd his eves to laughK
-
Neath his flow'ry chaplet's loadE
-
With the drink that brightly glow'dE
-
He the circle enter'd inL
And he kindly bade me quaffK
-
Then methought This child can ne'erG
-
With his gift so bright and fairG
-
To the arch fiend be akinL
-
Pure life's courage drink cried heM
This advice to prize then learnN
-
Never to this place returnN
-
Trusting in thy spells absurdE
Dig no longer fruitlesslyM
-
Guests by night and toil by dayE
-
Weeks laborious feast days gayE
-
Be thy future magic wordE
