WHAT tuneful strains salute mine earA
-
Without the castle wallsB
Oh let the song re echo hereA
-
Within our festal hallsB
Thus spake the king the page out hiedC
The boy return'd the monarch criedC
-
Admit the old man yonderD
-
All hail ye noble lords to nightC
-
All hail ye beauteous damesE
Star placed by star What heavenly sightC
-
Whoe'er can tell their namesE
Within this glittering hall sublimeF
Be closed mine eyes 'tis not the timeF
-
For me to feast my wonderD
-
The minstrel straightway closed his eyesG
-
And woke a thrilling toneH
The knights look'd on in knightly guiseG
-
Fair looks tow'rd earth were thrownH
The monarch ravish'd by the strainI
Bade them bring forth a golden chainI
-
To be his numbers' guerdonI
-
The golden chain give not to meJ
-
But give the chain to thoseK
In whose bold face we shiver'd seeJ
-
The lances of our foesK
Or give it to thy chancellor thereL
With other burdens he may bearL
-
This one more golden burdenI
-
I sing like birds of blithesome noteC
-
That in the branches dwellM
The song that rises from the throatC
-
Repays the minstrel wellM
One boon I'd crave if not too boldC
One bumper in a cup of goldC
-
Be as my guerdon givenI
-
The bowl he raised the bowl he quaff'dC
-
Oh drink with solace fraughtC
Oh house thrice blest where such a draughtC
-
A trifling gift is thoughtC
When Fortune smiles remember meJ
And as I thank you heartilyJ
-
As warmly thank ye HeavenI
