The Fox And Crane. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BC B D ED E F GF G C HC H I CI C E FE F C BC B

Once two persons uninvitedA
-
Came to join my dinner tableB
For the nonce they lived unitedC
-
Fox and crane yclept in fableB
-
Civil greetings pass'd between usD
-
Then I pluck'd some pigeons tenderE
For the fox of jackal geniusD
-
Adding grapes in full grown splendourE
-
Long neck'd flasks I put as dishesF
-
For the crane without delayingG
Fill'd with gold and silver fishesF
-
In the limpid water playingG
-
Had ye witness'd Reynard plantedC
-
At his flat plate all demurelyH
Ye with envy must have grantedC
-
Ne'er was such a gourmand surelyH
-
While the bird with circumspectionI
-
On one foot as usual cradledC
From the flasks his fish refectionI
-
With his bill and long neck ladledC
-
One the pigeons praised the otherE
-
As they went extoll'd the fishesF
Each one scoffing at his brotherE
-
For preferring vulgar dishesF
-
-
-
-
If thou wouldst preserve thy creditC
-
When thou askest folks to guzzleB
At thy hoard take care to spread itC
-
Suited both for bill and muzzleB
