Rhyme Scheme: A BA BC DC D E FE GH IH I J KJ KL ML L A LA LI DI D

THE waters rush'd the waters roseA
-
A fisherman sat byB
While on his line in calm reposeA
-
He cast his patient eyeB
And as he sat and hearken'd thereC
-
The flood was cleft in twainD
And lo a dripping mermaid fairC
-
Sprang from the troubled mainD
-
She sang to him and spake the whileE
-
quot Why lurest thou my broodF
With human wit and human guileE
-
From out their native floodG
Oh couldst thou know how gladly dartH
-
The fish across the seaI
Thou wouldst descend e'en as thou artH
-
And truly happy beI
-
quot Do not the sun and moon with graceJ
-
Their forms in ocean laveK
Shines not with twofold charms their faceJ
-
When rising from the waveK
The deep deep heavens then lure thee notL
-
The moist yet radiant blueM
Not thine own form to tempt thy lotL
-
'Midst this eternal dew quotL
-
The waters rush'd the waters roseA
-
Wetting his naked feetL
As if his true love's words were thoseA
-
His heart with longing beatL
She sang to him to him spake sheI
-
His doom was fix'd I weenD
Half drew she him and half sank heI
-
And ne'er again was seenD
