THERE was a wooer blithe and gayA
-
A son of France was heB
Who in his arms for many a dayA
-
As though his bride were sheB
A poor young maiden had caress'dC
And fondly kiss'd and fondly press'dC
-
And then at length desertedD
-
When this was told the nut brown maidE
-
Her senses straightway fledF
She laugh'd and wept and vow'd and pray'dE
-
And presently was deadF
The hour her soul its farewell tookG
The boy was sad with terror shookG
-
Then sprang upon his chargerH
-
He drove his spurs into his sideI
-
And scour'd the country roundJ
But wheresoever he might rideI
-
No rest for him was foundJ
For seven long days and nights he rodeK
It storm'd the waters overflow'dK
-
It bluster'd lighten'd thunder'dL
-
On rode he through the tempest's dinM
-
Till he a building spiedI
In search of shelter crept he inM
-
When he his steed had tiedI
And as he groped his doubtful wayA
The ground began to rock and swayA
-
He fell a hundred fathomsN
-
When he recover'd from the blowO
-
He saw three lights pass byP
He sought in their pursuit to goO
-
The lights appear'd to flyP
They led his footsteps all astrayA
Up down through many a narrow wayA
-
Through ruin'd desert cellarsQ
-
When lo he stood within a hallR
-
With hollow eyes and grinning allR
They bade him taste the fareS
-
A hundred guests sat thereS
He saw his sweetheart 'midst the throngT
Wrapp'd up in grave clothes white and longT
-
She turn'd andU
