The Country Schoolmaster Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBACDDEEFFGGHHGGGGII JJEE KK A LLMMGGGGAAN NKKGG

IA
-
A MASTER of a country schoolB
Jump'd up one day from off his stoolB
Inspired with firm resolve to tryA
To gain the best societyC
So to the nearest baths he walk'dD
And into the saloon he stalk'dD
He felt quite startled at the doorE
Ne'er having seen the like beforeE
To the first stranger made he nowF
A very low and graceful bowF
But quite forgot to bear in mindG
That people also stood behindG
His left hand neighbor's paunch he struckH
A grievous blow by great ill luckH
Pardon for this he first entreatedG
And then in haste his bow repeatedG
His right hand neighbor next he hitG
And begg'd him too to pardon itG
But on his granting his petitionI
Another was in like conditionI
These compliments he paid to allJ
Behind before across the hallJ
At length one who could stand no moreE
Show'd him impatiently the doorE

May many pond'ring on their crimesK
A moral draw from this betimesK

-
As he proceeded on his wayL
He thought I was too weak to dayL
To bow I'll ne'er again be seenM
For goats will swallow what is greenM
Across the fields he now must speedG
Not over stumps and stones indeedG
But over meads and cornfields sweetG
Trampling down all with clumsy feetG
A farmer met him by and byA
And didn't ask him how or whyA
But with his fist saluted himN
-
I feel new life in every limbN
Our traveller cried in ecstasyK
Who art thou who thus gladden'st meK
May Heaven such blessings ever sendG
Ne'er may I want a jovial friendG
