COUNTA
-
I KNOW a flower of beauty rareB
-
Ah how I hold it dearC
To seek it I would fain repairB
-
Were I not prison'd hereD
My sorrow sore oppresses meE
For when I was at libertyE
-
I had it close beside meE
-
Though from this castle's walls so steepF
-
I cast mine eyes aroundG
And gaze oft from the lofty keepF
-
The flower can not be foundG
Whoe'er would bring it to my sightH
Whether a vassal he or knightH
-
My dearest friend I'd deem himI
-
THE ROSEJ
-
I blossom fair thy tale of woesJ
-
I hear from 'neath thy grateK
Thou doubtless meanest me the roseJ
-
Poor knight of high estateK
Thou hast in truth a lofty mindL
The queen of flowers is then enshrin'dL
-
I doubt not in thy bosomM
-
COUNTA
-
Thy red in dress of green array'dN
-
As worth all praise I holdO
And so thou'rt treasured by each maidN
-
Like precious stones or goldO
Thy wreath adorns the fairest faceP
But still thou'rt not the flower whose graceP
-
I honour here in silenceQ
-
THE LILYE
-
The rose is wont with pride to swellR
-
And ever seeks to riseS
But gentle sweethearts love full wellR
-
The lily's charms to prizeS
The heart that fills a bosom trueT
That is like me unsullied tooT
-
My merit values dulyE
-
COUNTA
-
In truth I hope myself unstain'dU
-
And free from grievous crimeV
Yet I am here a prisoner chain'dU
-
And pass in grief my timeV
To me thou art an image sureW
Of many a maiden mild and pureW
-
And yet I know a dearerX
-
THE PINKY
-
That must be me the pink who scentZ
-
The warder's garden hereD
Or wherefore is he so intentZ
-
My charms with care to rearC
My petals stand in beauteous ringA2
Sweet incense all around I flingA2
-
And boast a thousand coloursS
-
COUNTA
-
The pink in truth we should not slightH
-
It is the gardener's prideB2
It now must stand exposed to lightH
-
Now in the shade abideB2
Yet what can make the Count's heart glowC2
Is no mere pomp of outward showC2
-
It is a silent flowerX
-
THE VIOLETD2
-
Here stand I modestly half hidE2
-
And fain would silence keepF
Yet since to speak I now am bidE2
-
I'll break my silence deepF
If worthy Knight I am that flowerX
It grieves me that I have not powerX
-
To breathe forth all my sweetnessS
-
COUNTA
-
The violet's charms I prize indeedF2
-
So modest 'tis and fairB
And smells so sweet yet more I needF2
-
To ease my heavy careB
The truth I'll whisper in thine earD
Upon these rocky heights so drearD
-
I cannot find the loved oneG2
-
The truest maiden 'neath the skyH2
-
Roams near the stream belowC2
And breathes forth many a gentle sighH2
-
Till I from hence can goC2
And when she plucks a flow'ret blueT
And says Forget me not I tooT
-
Though far away can feel itD2
-
Ay distance only swells love's mightH
-
When fondly love a pairD
Though prison'd in the dungeon's nightH
-
In life I linger thereD
And when my heart is breaking nighH2
Forget me not is all I cryH2
-
And straightway life returnethI2
