WITH a bridegroom's joyous bearingA
-
Mounts Sir Curt his noble beastB
To his mistress' home repairingA
-
There to hold his wedding feastB
When a threatening foe advancesC
-
From a desert rocky spotD
For the fray they couch their lancesC
-
Not delaying speaking notD
-
Long the doubtful fight continuesC
-
Victory then for Curt declaresC
Conqueror though with wearied sinewsC
-
Forward on his road he faresC
When he sees though strange it may beE
-
Something 'midst the foliage moveF
'Tis a mother with her babyE
-
Stealing softly through the groveG
-
And upon the spot she beckonsC
-
Wherefore love this speed so wildH
Of the wealth thy storehouse reckonsC
-
Hast thou nought to give thy childH
Flames of rapture now dart through himI
-
And he longs for nothing moreJ
While the mother seemeth to himI
-
Lovely as the maid of yoreJ
-
But he hears his servants blowingA
-
And bethinks him of his brideK
And ere long while onward goingA
-
Chances past a fair to rideK
In the booths he forthwith buys himI
-
For his mistress many a pledgeL
But alas some Jews surprise himI
-
And long standing debts allegeL
-
And the courts of justice dulyE
-
Send the knight to prison straightM
Oh accursed story trulyE
-
For a hero what a fateM
Can my patience such things weatherN
-
Great is my perplexityE
Women debts and foes togetherN
-
Ah no knight escapes scot freeE
