She behind yon mountain livesA
Who my love's sweet guerdon givesA
Tell me mount how this can beB
Very glass thou seem'st to meB
And I seem to be close byC
For I see her drawing nighC
Now because I'm absent sadD
Now because she sees me gladD
-
Soon between us rise to sightE
Valleys cool with bushes lightE
Streams and meadows next appearF
-
Mills and wheels the surest tokenG
That a level spot is nearF
-
Plains far stretching and unbrokenG
And so onwards onwards roamH
To my garden and my homeH
-
But how comes it then to passI
All this gives no joy alasI
I was ravish'd by her sightE
By her eyes so fair and brightE
By her footstep soft and lightE
How her peerless charms I praisedJ
When from head to foot I gazedJ
I am here she's far awayK
I am gone with her to stayK
-
If on rugged hills she wanderL
-
If she haste the vale alongM
Pinions seem to flutter yonderL
-
And the air is fill'd with songM
With the glow of youth still playingN
-
Joyous vigour in each limbO
One in silence is delayingN
-
She alone 'tis blesses himO
-
Love thou art too fair I weenG
Fairer I have never seenG
From the heart full easilyB
Blooming flowers are cull'd by theeB
If I think Oh were it soP
Bone and marrow seen to glowP
If rewarded by her loveQ
Can I greater rapture proveR
-
And still fairer is the brideS
When in me she will confideS
When she speaks and lets me knowP
All her tale of joy and woeP
All her lifetime's historyB
Now is fully known to meB
Who in child or woman e'erL
Soul and body found so fairT
