THE DAM BREAKS DOWN THE ICE PLAIN GROWLSA
THE FLOODS ARISE THE WATER HOWLSA
-
I'll bear thee mother across the swellB
-
'Tis not yet high I can wade right wellB
-
Remember us too in what danger are weC
-
Thy fellow lodger and children threeC
-
The trembling woman Thou'rt going awayD
-
She bears the mother across the sprayD
-
Quick haste to the mound and awhile there waitE
-
I'll soon return and all will be straightE
-
The mound's close by and safe from the wetF
-
But take my goat too my darling petF
-
THE DAM DISSOLVES THE ICE PLAIN GROWLSA
THE FLOODS DASH ON THE WATER HOWLSA
-
She places the mother safe on the shoreG
-
Fair Susan then turns tow'rd the flood once moreG
-
Oh whither Oh whither The breadth fast growsH
-
Both here and there the water o'erflowsH
-
Wilt venture thou rash one the billows to braveI
THEY SHALL AND THEY MUST BE PRESERVED FROM THE WAVEI
-
THE DAM DISAPPEARS THE WATER GROWLSH
LIKE OCEAN BILLOWS IT HEAVES AND HOWLSH
-
Fair Susan returns by the way she had triedJ
-
The waves roar around but she turns not asideJ
-
She reaches the mound and the neighbour straightE
-
But for her and the children alas too lateE
-
THE DAM DISAPPEAR'D LIKE A SEA IT GROWLSH
ROUND THE HILLOCK IN CIRCLING EDDIES IT HOWLSH
-
The foaming abyss gapes wide and whirls roundK
-
The women and children are borne to the groundK
-
The horn of the goat by one is seized fastL
-
But ah they all must perish at lastL
-
Fair Susan still stands there untouch'd by the waveI
-
The youngest the noblest oh who now will saveI
-
Fair Susan still stands there as bright as a starM
-
But alas all hope all assistance is farM
-
The foaming waters around her roarG
-
To save her no bark pushes off from the shoreG
-
Her gaze once again she lifts up to HeavenN
-
Then gently away by the flood she is drivenN
-
NO DAM NO PLAIN TO MARK THE PLACEH
SOME STRAGGLING TREES ARE THE ONLY TRACEH
-
The rushing water the wilderness coversH
-
Yet Susan's image still o'er it hoversH
-
The water sinks the plains re appearO
-
Fair Susan's lamented with many a tearP
-
May he who refuses her story to tellB
-
Be neglected in life and in death as wellB
