A village Chorus is supposed to be assembled and about toA
commence its festive processionB
-
Written for the birthday of the Duchess Louisa of WeimarC
-
CHORUSD
-
THE festal day hail yeE
-
With garlands of pleasureF
-
And dances' soft measureF
With rapture commingledG
And sweet choral songH
-
DAMONB
-
Oh how I yearn from out the crowd to fleeE
What joy a secret glade would give to meE
Amid the throng the turmoil hereI
Confined the plain the breezes e'en appearJ
-
CHORUSD
-
Now order it trulyE
That ev'ry one dulyE
May roam and may wanderF
Now here and now yonderF
-
The meadows alongH
-
The Chorus retreats gradually and the song becomes fainter andK
fainter till it dies away in the distanceL
-
DAMONB
-
In vain ye call in vain would lure me onM
True my heart speaks but with itself aloneN
-
And if I may viewA
-
A blessing fraught landO
-
The heaven's clear blueA
-
And the plain's verdant hueA
-
Alone I'll rejoiceP
-
Undisturbed by man's voiceP
-
-
And there I'll pay homageQ
-
To womanly meritR
-
Observe it in spiritR
-
In spirit pay homageQ
-
To echo aloneN
-
Shall my secret be knownN
-
-
CHORUSD
-
Faintly mingling with Damon's song in the distanceL
-
To echo aloneN
-
Shall my secret be knownN
-
MENALCASL
-
My friend why meet I here with theeE
-
Thou hast'nest not to join the festal throngH
No longer stay but come with meE
-
And mingle in the dance and songH
-
DAMONB
-
Thou'rt welcome friend but suffer me to roamS
-
Where these old beeches hide me from man's viewA
Love seeks in solitude a homeS
-
And homage may retreat there tooA
-
MENALCASL
-
Thou seekest here a spurious fameT
-
And hast a mind to day to grieve meE
Love as thy portion thou mayst claimT
-
But homage thou must share with all believe meE
-
When their voices thousands raiseL
And the dawn of morning praiseL
-
Rapture bringingU
-
Blithely singingU
-
On before usL
Heart and ear in pleasure vieV
-
-
And when thousands join in chorusL
-
With the feelings brightly glowingU
-
And the wishes overflowingU
Forcibly they'll bear thee highV
-
The Chorus gradually approaches from the distanceL
-
DAMONB
-
Distant strains are hither wendingU
-
And I'm gladden'd by the throngH
Yes they're coming yes descendingU
-
To the valley from the heightW
-
MENALCASL
-
Let us haste our footsteps blendingU
-
With the rhythm of the songH
Yes they come their course they're bendingU
-
Tow'rd the wood's green sward so brightW
-
CHORUSL
Gradually becoming louderF
-
Yes we hither come attendingU
-
With the harmony of songH
As the hours their race are endingU
-
On this day of blest delightW
-
ALLX
-
Let none revealY
The thoughts we feelY
The aims we ownN
Let joy aloneN
-
Disclose the storyE
She'll prove it rightW
And her delightW
-
Includes the gloryE
Includes the blissL
Of days like thisL
