COULD this early bliss but restA
-
Constant for one single hourB
But e'en now the humid WestA
-
Scatters many a vernal showerB
Should the verdure give me joyC
-
'Tis to it I owe the shadeD
Soon will storms its bloom destroyC
-
Soon will Autumn bid it fadeD
-
Eagerly thy portion seizeE
-
If thou wouldst possess the fruitF
Fast begin to ripen theseE
-
And the rest already shootF
With each heavy storm of rainG
-
Change comes o'er thy valley fairH
Once alas but not againI
-
Can the same stream hold thee e'erB
-
And thyself what erst at leastJ
-
Firm as rocks appear'd to riseK
Walls and palaces thou seestJ
-
But with ever changing eyesK
Fled for ever now the lipL
-
That with kisses used to glowM
And the foot that used to skipL
-
O'er the mountain like the roeM
-
And the hand so true and warmN
-
Ever raised in charityJ
And the cunning fashion'd formN
-
All are now changed utterlyJ
And what used to bear thy nameO
-
When upon yon spot it stoodJ
Like a rolling billow cameO
-
Hast'ning on to join the floodJ
-
Be then the beginning foundJ
-
With the end in unisonP
Swifter than the forms aroundJ
-
Are themselves now fleeting onQ
Thank the merit in thy breastJ
-
Thank the mould within thy heartJ
That the Muses' favour blestJ
Ne'er will perish ne'er departJ
