How happens it that thou art sadA
-
While happy all appearB
Thine eye proclaims too well that thouC
-
Hast wept full many a tearD
-
If I have wept in solitudeE
-
None other shares my griefF
And tears to me sweet balsam areG
-
And give my heart reliefF
-
Thy happy friends invite thee nowC
-
Oh come then to our breastH
And let the loss thou hast sustain'dI
-
Be there to us confess'dH
-
Ye shout torment me knowing notJ
-
What 'tis afflicteth meK
Ah no I have sustained no lossL
-
Whate'er may wanting beK
-
If so it is arise in hasteM
-
Thou'rt young and full of lifeN
At years like thine man's blest with strengthO
-
And courage for the strifeN
-
Ah no in vain 'twould be to striveP
-
The thing I seek is farG
It dwells as high it gleams as fairD
-
As yonder glitt'ring starG
-
The stars we never long to claspQ
-
We revel in their lightR
And with enchantment upward gazeS
-
Each clear and radiant nightR
-
And I with rapture upward gazeS
-
On many a blissful dayT
Then let me pass the night in tearsU
-
Till tears are wip'd awayT
