WHY pacest thou my neighbour fairA
-
The garden all aloneB
If house and land thou seek'st to guardC
-
I'd thee as mistress ownB
-
My brother sought the cellar maidD
-
And suffered her no restE
She gave him a refreshing draughtF
-
A kiss too she impress'dE
-
My cousin is a prudent wightG
-
The cook's by him ador'dH
He turns the spit round ceaselesslyI
-
To gain love's sweet rewardH
-
We six together then beganJ
-
A banquet to consumeK
When lo a fourth pair singing cameL
-
And danced into the roomK
-
Welcome were they and welcome tooM
-
Was a fifth jovial pairA
Brimful of news and stored with talesN
-
And jests both new and rareA
-
For riddles spirit railleryA
-
And wit a place remain'dO
A sixth pair then our circle join'dP
-
And so that prize was gain'dO
-
And yet to make us truly blestE
-
One miss'd we and full soreA
A true and tender couple cameL
-
We needed them no moreA
-
The social banquet now goes onQ
-
Unchequer'd by alloyR
The sacred double numbers thenS
-
Let us at once enjoyR
