JOHN courts Perrette but all in vainA
Love's sweetest oaths and tears and sighsB
All potent spells her heart to gainA
The ardent lover vainly triesB
Fruitless his arts to make her waverC
She will not grant the smallest favourC
A ruse our youth resolved to tryC
The cruel air to mollifyC
Holding his fingers ten outspreadD
To Perrette's gaze and with no dreadD
So often said he can I proveE
My sweet Perrette how warm my loveF
When lover's last avowals failG
To melt the maiden's coy suspicionsH
A lover's sign will oft prevailG
To win the way to soft concessionsH
Half won she takes the tempting baitD
Smiles on him draws her lover nearerC
With heart no longer obdurateD
She teaches him no more to fear herC
A pinch a kiss a kindling eyeC
Her melting glances nothing saidD
John ceases not his suit to plyC
Till his first finger's debt is paidD
A second third and fourth he gainsI
Takes breath and e'en a fifth maintainsI
But who could long such contest wageJ
Not I although of fitting ageJ
Nor John himself for here he stoppedD
And further effort sudden droppedD
Perrette whose appetite increasedD
just as her lover's vigour ceasedD
In her fond reckoning defeatedD
Considered she was greatly cheatedD
If duty well discharged such blameK
Deserve for many a highborn dameK
Would be content with such deceitD
But Perrette as already toldD
Out of her count began to scoldD
And call poor John an arrant cheatD
For promising and not performingL
John calmly listened to her stormingL
And well content with work well doneM
Thinking his laurels fairly wonM
Cooly replied on taking leaveN
No cause I see to fume and grieveN
Or for such trifle to disputeD
To promise and to executeD
Are not the same be it confessedD
Suffice it to have done one's bestD
With time I'll yet discharge what's dueD
Meanwhile my sweet Perrette adieuD
