A
-
By gone a thousand years of warB
The wearers of the fleeceC
And wolves at last made peaceC
Which both appear'd the better forB
For if the wolves had now and thenD
Eat up a straggling ewe or wetherB
As often had the shepherd menD
Turn'd wolf skins into leatherB
Fear always spoil'd the verdant herbageE
And so it did the bloody carnageE
Hence peace was sweet and lest it should be rivenF
On both sides hostages were givenF
The sheep as by the terms arrangedG
For pups of wolves their dogs exchangedG
Which being done above suspicionF
Confirm'd and seal'd by high commissionF
What time the pups were fully grownH
And felt an appetite for preyB
And saw the sheepfold left aloneH
The shepherds all awayB
They seized the fattest lambs they couldI
And choking dragg'd them to the woodI
Of which by secret means apprisedJ
Their sires as is surmisedJ
Fell on the hostage guardians of the sheepK
And slew them all asleepK
So quick the deed of perfidy was doneF
There fled to tell the tale not oneF
-
From which we may concludeL
That peace with villains will be ruedL
Peace in itself 'tis trueB
May be a good for youB
But 'tis an evil nathlessC
When enemies are faithlessC
