A
-
A Wolf repleteB
With humanity sweetB
A trait not much suspectedC
On his cruel deedsD
The fruit of his needsD
Profoundly thus reflectedC
-
'I'm hated ' said heE
'As joint enemyE
By hunters dogs and clownsF
They swear I shall dieG
And their hue and cryG
The very thunder drownsF
-
'My brethren have fledH
With price on the headH
From England's merry landI
King Edgar came outJ
And put them to routJ
With many a deadly bandI
-
'And there's not a squireK
But blows up the fireL
By hostile proclamationM
Nor a human bratN
Dares cry but thatN
Its mother mocks my nationM
-
'And all for whatO
For a sheep with the rotP
Or scabby mangy assQ
Or some snarling curL
With less meat than furL
On which I've broken fastR
-
'Well henceforth I'll striveS
That nothing aliveS
Shall die to quench my thirstT
No lambkin shall fallU
Nor puppy at allU
To glut my maw accurstT
With grass I'll appeaseV
Or browse on the treesV
Or die of famine firstT
-
'What of carcass warmW
Is it worth the stormW
Of universal hate '-
As he spoke these wordsX
The lords of the herdsX
All seated at their baitT
He saw and observedT
The meat which was servedT
Was nought but roasted lambY
'O O ' said the beastT
'Repent of my feastT
All butcher as I amY
On these vermin meanZ
Whose guardians e'enA2
Eat at a rate quadrupleB2
Themselves and their dogsC2
As greedy as hogsC2
And I a wolf to scruple '-
-
'Look out for your woolD2
I'll not be a foolE2
The very pet I'll eatT
The lamb the best lookingF2
Without any cookingF2
I'll strangle from the teatT
And swallow the damY
As well as the lambY
And stop her foolish bleatT
Old Hornie too rot himG2
The sire that begot himG2
Shall be among my meat '-
-
Well reasoning beastT
Were we sent to feastT
On creatures wild and tameH2
And shall we reduceI2
The beasts to the useI2
Of vegetable gameH2
-
Shall animals notT
Have flesh hook or potT
As in the age of goldT
And we claim the rightT
In the pride of our mightT
Themselves to have and holdT
O shepherds that keepJ2
Your folds full of sheepJ2
The wolf was only wrongK2
Because so to speakL2
His jaws were too weakL2
To break your palings strongK2
