A
-
A troutling some time sinceB
Endeavour'd vainly to convinceB
A hungry fishermanC
Of his unfitness for the frying panC
That controversy made it plainD
That letting go a good secureE
In hope of future gainD
Is but imprudence pureE
The fisherman had reason goodF
The troutling did the best he couldF
Both argued for their livesG
Now if my present purpose thrivesH
I'll prop my former propositionI
By building on a small additionI
A certain wolf in point of witJ
The prudent fisher's oppositeK
A dog once finding far astrayL
Prepared to take him as his preyL
The dog his leanness pledM
'Your lordship sure ' he saidM
'Cannot be very eagerN
To eat a dog so meagreN
To wait a little do not grudgeO
The wedding of my master's only daughterN
Will cause of fatted calves and fowls a slaughterN
And then as you yourself can judgeO
I cannot help becoming fatter '-
The wolf believing waived the matterN
And so some days therefromP
Return'd with sole design to seeQ
If fat enough his dog might beQ
The rogue was now at homeP
He saw the hunter through the fenceR
'My friend ' said he 'please waitS
I'll be with you a moment henceR
And fetch our porter of the gate '-
This porter was a dog immenseR
That left to wolves no future tenseR
Suspicion gave our wolf a jogT
It might not be so safely tamper'dU
'My service to your porter dog '-
Was his reply as off he scamper'dU
His legs proved better than his headM
And saved him life to learn his tradeV
