The Two Rats, The Fox, And The Egg Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDCDEEFEFEGHIII IJJKKJJ EEEE

Two rats in foraging fell on an eggA
For gentry such as theyB
A genteel dinner every wayB
They needed not to find an ox's legA
Brimful of joy and appetiteC
They were about to sack the boxD
So tight without the aid of locksD
When suddenly there came in sightC
A personage Sir Pullet FoxD
Sure luck was never more untowardE
Since Fortune was a vixen frowardE
How should they save their egg and baconF
Their plunder couldn't then be bagg'dE
Should it in forward paws be takenF
Or roll'd along or dragg'dE
Each method seem'd impossibleG
And each was then of danger fullH
Necessity ingenious motherI
Brought forth what help'd them from their potherI
As still there was a chance to save their preyI
The sponger yet some hundred yards awayI
One seized the egg and turn'd upon his backJ
And then in spite of many a thump and thwackJ
That would have torn perhaps a coat of mailK
The other dragg'd him by the tailK
Who dares the inference to blinkJ
That beasts possess wherewith to thinkJ
-
Were I commission'd to bestowE
This power on creatures here belowE
The beasts should have as much of mindE
As infants of the human kindE
