The Virtues should be sisters hand in handB
Since banded brothers all the Vices standB
When one of these our hearts attacksC
All come in file there only lacksC
From out the cluster here and thereD
A mate of some antagonizing pairD
That can't agree the common roof to shareD
But all the Virtues as a sisterhoodE
Have scarcely ever in one subject stoodE
We find one brave but passionateF
Another prudent but ingrateF
Of beasts the dog may claim to beG
The pattern of fidelityG
But for our teaching little wiserH
He's both a fool and gormandiserH
For proof I cite two mastiffs that espiedG
A dead ass floating on a water wideG
The distance growing more and moreH
Because the wind the carcass boreH
'My friend ' said one 'your eyes are bestG
Pray let them on the water restG
What thing is that I seem to seeG
An ox or horse what can it be '-
'Hey ' cried his mate 'what matter whichI
Provided we could get a flitchI
It doubtless is our lawful preyH
The puzzle is to find some wayH
To get the prize for wide the spaceJ
To swim with wind against your faceJ
Let's drink the flood our thirsty throatsK
Will gain the end as well as boatsK
The water swallow'd by and byeL
We'll have the carcass high and dryL
Enough to last a week at least '-
Both drank as some do at a feastG
Their breath was quench'd before their thirstG
And presently the creatures burstG
-
And such is man Whatever heG
May set his soul to do or beG
To him is possibilityG
How many vows he makesM
How many steps he takesM
How does he strive and pant and strainN
Fortune's or Glory's prize to gainN
If round my farm off well I mustG
Or fill my coffers with the dustG
Or master Hebrew science historyG
I make my task to drink the seaG
One spirit's projects to fulfilO
Four bodies would require and stillO
The work would stop half doneP
The lives of four MethuselahsG
Placed end to end for use alasG
Would not suffice the wants of oneP
