Long from the monarch of the starsB
The daughters of the mud receivedC
Support and aid nor dearth nor warsD
Meanwhile their teeming nation grievedC
They spread their empire far and wideE
Through every marsh by every tideE
The queens of swamps I mean no moreF
Than simply frogs great names are cheapG
Caball'd together on the shoreF
And cursed their patron from the deepG
And came to be a perfect boreF
Pride rashness and ingratitudeE
The progeny of fortune goodE
Soon brought them to a bitter cryH
The end of sleep for earth and skyH
Their clamours if they did not crazeI
Would truly seem enough to raiseI
All living things to mutinyJ
Against the power of Nature's eyeH
The sun according to their croakK
Was turning all the world to smokeK
It now behoved to take alarmL
And promptly powerful troops to armL
Forthwith in haste they sentE
Their croaking embassiesM
To all their states they wentE
And all their coloniesM
To hear them talk the allN
That rides upon this whirling ballN
Of men and things was left at stakeO
Upon the mud that skirts a lakeO
The same complaint in fens and bogsP
Still ever strains their lungsQ
And yet these much complaining frogsP
Had better hold their tonguesQ
For should the sun in anger riseR
And hurl his vengeance from the skiesR
That kingless half aquatic crewS
Their impudence would sorely rueS
