A
-
'O Jupiter whose fruitful brainB
By odd obstetrics freed from painB
Bore Pallas erst my mortal foeC
Pray listen to my tale of woeC
This Progne takes my lawful preyD
As through the air she cuts her wayD
And skims the waves in seeming playD
My flies she catches from my doorE
'Yes mine I emphasize the wordF
And but for this accursed birdF
My net would hold an ample storeE
For I have woven it of stuffG
To hold the strongest strong enough '-
'Twas thus in terms of insolenceH
Complain'd the fretful spider onceH
Of palace tapestry a weaverI
But then a spinster and deceiverI
That hoped within her toils to bringJ
Of insects all that ply the wingJ
The sister swift of PhilomelD
Intent on business prosper'd wellD
In spite of the complaining pestK
The insects carried to her nestK
Nest pitiless to suffering fliesL
Mouths gaping aye to gormandizeL
Of young ones clamouringJ
And stammeringJ
With unintelligible criesL
The spider with but head and feetM
And powerless to competeM
With wings so fleetM
Soon saw herself a preyI
The swallow passing swiftly byN
Bore web and all awayI
The spinster dangling in the skyN
-
Two tables hath our Maker setO
For all that in this world are metO
To seats around the firstP
The skilful vigilant and strong are beckon'dQ
Their hunger and their thirstP
The rest must quell with leavings at the secondQ
